SOLVED: unequal router wifi performance

Here you can post about your various experiences with PC hardware. You can also post about hardware that is not compatible with the linux kernel or not recommended for use with Porteus.

SOLVED: unequal router wifi performance

Post#1 by francois » 06 Sep 2015, 22:51

I have an unequal wifi router performance with a dlink dir-601 router. Sometimes it works, at other times it does not work. At times it is slower.

With porteus linked thru cable my modem is yielding 10 mbps download according to the speed tests:
-speedtest_cli.py:
http://www.tecmint.com/check-internet-s ... -in-linux/

Thru the wifi the same speedtests will catch between 0 and 6 mbps.

Is there something to do with that or just buy another? For streaming purposes what do you propose as a router?

What do you mean?..your wifi is slower than a cable connection?..only sometimes?...
Well, I don't use "speedtest".but I do
root@localhost:~# iwconfig
which shows me (wlan0):
Bit Rate=150 Mb/s (yours may vary)
Also while downloading a File FF shows the speed, (sometimes 2.2Mb sometimes 100kb)
depending on how fast the server is.

It doesn't look too bad except
Tx excessive retries:772
This is a number of packets your card was unable to deliver.
After being online for 6 Hours I have only 63
Maybe you can find a better (router <=> client) position.
Depending on where you live, you might have a lot of wifi networks surrounding you
using the same channel.(?)

You have a good intuition. There is 16 WiFi spot within my laptop range in the building where I live.

Tx excessive retries:772
I have got this figure in only a few minutes of connection.

I am on channel 1 on my router spot. Not only the connection is irregular, being at sometimes very slow, but by moments will not connect at a all.

How do I change the channel? Do I do this from the router?

From the admin router page, thru the wifi manual settings, there are choices to be made:
- I have disable automatic channel scan and choosen channel 6
- I have choosen automatic 20/40 mhz instead of 20 mhz

Wifi downloading speed: 10.10 mbits
Wifi uploading speed: 1.52

Everything is in order. Thanks so much.
