[Solved] Some modules do not seem to be available...

Here you can post about the issues related to modifications performed manually (not through the kiosk wizard). Example: swapped kernel, added 3rd party modules or files.
Please describe in detail what has been changed and hopefully other kiosk user will be able to help.
Porteus team wont resolve bugs posted in this category as we support only modifications made by the kiosk wizard.

[Solved] Some modules do not seem to be available...

Post#1 by masa » 01 Oct 2014, 02:39

I am new to Porteus Kiosk and I am trying to use several modules such as 06-fonts.xzm, but when I set "Extra fonts" etc to "Enable" in the installation wizard, it always fails to download the modules and stopped the installation. so I downloaded some modules from http://porteus-kiosk.org/public/ and rebuilt ISO, following the steps in the page (http://porteus-kiosk.org/kiosk-customization.html). I tried to install it with the rebuilt ISO, but it still failed to download the module instead of just using the built-in modules I put in the ISO. Could you tell me how to solve this? Very sorry for my basic question...

hi masa,

i'm happy that you have reported this as i want to sort md5sum problem permamently.
please answer following questions:
a) how many times did you try to install the kiosk? does it always fail on 006-fonts.xzm component?
b) are you using wired or wireless connection?
c) are you behind a proxy?
d) when did you download kiosk ISO? if it's older that a week then pelase download it again as i have made some improvements to it few days ago (using 'wget -c' when downloading components)
e) could you make a photo of the failure? i want to check md5sum and size of downloaded file displayed on the screen.

if we wont find an answer then i'll ask you for testing a new ISO. i'm planning to split every module into 500KB chunks (like in torrent) and download them separately doing md5sum check for each then merge at the end into one big module. will see how it works.

thank you

fanthom,

From a conclusion, I downloaded ISO file this morning and tried installing again. It worked like a charm!!

This is how I downloaded the ISO file.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
/opt/wget-1.15/bin/wget -c http://porteus-kiosk.org/public/Porteus ... 1-i486.iso
md5sum Porteus-Kiosk-3.1.1-i486.iso
-->bb387f96c0d6665c41673865fee064cc Porteus-Kiosk-3.1.1-i486.iso
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This is what my setting looks like.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
connection=wired
network_interface=eth0
ip_address=10.0.0.152
netmask=255.255.255.0
default_gateway=10.0.0.1
dns_server=8.8.8.8 8.8.4.4
homepage=10.0.0.145
hostname=*********
allow_icmp_protocol=yes
firefox_idle=5
root_password=*********
screen_saver_idle=10
timezone=Pacific/Honolulu
vnc_interactive=yes
vnc_password=*********
wallpaper=http://*********.jpg
additional_components=09-x11vnc.xzm 08-ssh.xzm 07-java.xzm 06-fonts.xzm 05-flash_legacy.xzm
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

(Answer just in case)
a) I had been trying to install with the setting above by using the ISO (md5: 167185C960C97AE6D5CA7354588235FF) maybe more than 10 times. I tried several variation of combination of additional components and had realized that I could only downloaded 8-ssh.xzm. I failed to download the rest of them.
b) Wired connection
c)No
d)I did and it worked!! Thank you very much for your great work!!
e)I did not keep any of error messages. I was going to take pictures of those errors today, but I didn't because it worked!

I am digressing a little, but my understanding is that if you manually download modules and rebuild an ISO following the steps on http://porteus-kiosk.org/kiosk-customization.html, you do not have to download them during the installation. Is this correct? I still want to know why I failed to install it even though I rebuilt an ISO because I want to try customizing modules in the future.

i'm glad to hear that latest ISO worked :)

i have checked server statistics and since yesterday there was 97 succcessfull kiosk installs which required downloads of additional components from the server and only 2 failures so i guess these two users must really have a bad connection. from server and ISO point of view everything seems to be ok.
will keep watching stats but i guess that 'torrent like' approach wont be needed.

yes - this should be possible with the ISO from last week.

thanks
