Porteus 2.1 Development

New features which should be implemented in Porteus; suggestions are welcome. All questions or problems with testing releases (alpha, beta, or rc) should go in their relevant thread here, rather than the Bug Reports section.

Porteus 2.1 Development

Post#1 by Johannes » 12 Aug 2013, 14:47

The following would probably be a highly unpopular suggestion, but I will risk anyway. Instead of immediately proceeding towards the development of the next version of Porteus OS and the version after that, how about if the developers take it a little slow this time and concentrate on minor changes, bug fixes and regular application updates (same approach as LTS, Apple OS, or Windows 7, for example)?
I was very happy with version 1.2 but since there were hardly any bug fixes or updates for it after a while, it became outdated pretty quick. I always considered it a shame, because it was a pretty good OS. I have to admit that 2.1 is a completely different world compared to 1.2, but I think this time Porteus has finally developed a (nearly) perfect version of the OS. There isn't anything that I personally can think of to improve it. So why not concentrate on making 2.1 even better instead of jumping to develop the next versions straight away, at least for a while?

Thank you for listening,

Johannes

@Johannes

I had the same opinion about it as I came to Porteus.

I'm very pleased with the 2.0-XFCE-Version and I think I will
use this version as long as possible.

But I have to admit that I'm old-fashioned.I can still hear
"never touch a running system".... :)

I always think this is how things will proceed for us, that the next release will primarily be updates and we won't see a lot of major structural changes, but as we get more user feedback and see what's going on out in the (linux) world, and start thinking about how to make things run better, etc., we always seem to find more to do!

We're going to be focused on bugfixes and minor updates for the next few months, and this will probably take the form of update modules rather than an official "2.1.1", etc. releases. Official releases require a lot of time and coordination (we had about 700 emails sent around to get 2.1 out, though that includes RC1 and RC2 as well as final) but I can submit an update to fix a bug or two in one Desktop, put it on the server, and folks can download it through Porteus Updater and it only takes a few minutes. This is why we have a 6 month release cycle, so we can have a little of our time back :)

Like you, I'm hoping for a calmer 2.2 release (or 3.0 if we see a new Slackware release before then)! Personally, I'm pretty happy with the new module layout and the build wizard (big changes from 2.0) and I think the other dev's are too. Somehow, we've made Porteus smaller but with more flexibility and more options!
Please take a look at our online documentation, here. Suggestions are welcome!

The development will have to follow the trend of various indicators, including the rate of grow of the Porteus community. Good speed and bleeding edge technology are for now the most admired qualities of Porteus: these were the thoughts that gave origin to our distribution, and they seem to be right as yet! :)
Porteus is proud of the FASTEST KDE ever made.....(take akonadi, nepomuk and soprano out and you will have a decent OS).
The Porteus Community never sleeps!
