[Solved] LXDE - missing associations for mimetypes

Please reproduce your error on a second machine before posting, and check the error by running without saved changes or extra modules (See FAQ No. 13, "How to report a bug"). For unstable Porteus versions (alpha, beta, rc) please use the relevant thread in our "Development" section.

[Solved] LXDE - missing associations for mimetypes

Post#1 by fanthom » 25 Jan 2011, 09:54

LXDE is short of associations in general. For example all music, video, pdf, html files has no associated programs to them.
some work is done already by KSA_ARAB in this thread:
viewtopic.php?f=41&t=236&p=1165

would be nice if someone could provide full list of mimetype->program for LXDE before Porteus-1.0 arrives
Thanks in advance.
Please add [Solved] to your thread title if the solution was found.

this we should go with apps which are included in default 64 bit edition ISO. LXDE provides very few applications itself so we need to rely on KDE. In case of removing of KDE users will have to fix associations themselves.

all graphic files -> gpicview
all video files -> mplayer (or smplayer)
all audio files -> qmmp
web content -> firefox
txt -> leafpad
pdf -> okular
archives -> xarchiver

that's all what i have for now. Other propositions?
Please add [Solved] to your thread title if the solution was found.

@Ponce, suggested me to wait few days to try new version of Lxde.
http://porteus.org/forum/viewtopic.php?f=41&t=236#p1164

lets try it before release Porteus-v01 , maybe this problem will solve.

regards.

sorry KSA_ARAB, but I haven't suggested that the new version will solve this: you wrote me about some lxde new packages that doesn't work then edited the message later with that problem. :%)

BTW, I prepared new packages for i486 and x86_64 but I have no idea if they will fix the mimetype associations (of it's related at all) :sorry:

http://ponce.cc/slackware/slackware-current/lxde/
http://ponce.cc/slackware/slackware64-current/lxde/

remove lxappearance (substituted by lxappearance-new) and use these pcmanfm-new packages patched for root use on porteus. :beer:

Post#6 by Hamza » 29 Jan 2011, 20:43

i have found the solution for this !

Last intltool for i486 (32bit)
http://slackware.cs.utah.edu/pub/slackw ... i486-1.txz

Last intltool for x86_64 (64bit)
http://slackware.cs.utah.edu/pub/slackw ... 6_64-1.txz

Looks at http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1288265

we need recompile pcmanfm , or re download a slackware version if it's available !

Regards,
Thanks to Porteus Community !

i tried to recompile pcmanfm 0.9.7 , and i have this error

Re: LXDE - missing associations for mimetypes

Post#8 by Ahau » 31 Jan 2011, 16:31

I believe the missing associations issue can be resolved by adding 'update-desktop-database' to rc.local.

See http://library.gnome.org/admin/system-a ... ng.html.en

update-desktop-database updates the mimeinfo.cache file, which exists in /usr/share/applications. Upon starting LXDE, this file only contains a few entries, all for gpicview. After running update-desktop-database, this file contains the following, which is mime information pulled from the .desktop entries in /usr/share/applications:

Code: Select all

Of course, we could also use this as a starting point for /root/.local/share/applications/mimeapps.list and add/edit as necessary, but I think it would be better to have the system-wide definitions set by update-desktop-database, and have users define their own default applications in mimeapps.list as they see fit.

After running update-desktop-database, I was able to double click on several different filetypes, and they opened up for me.

I haven't checked all filetypes, and I want to crosscheck the contents of the mimeinfo.cache against all of the entries in /usr/share/mime/types and /usr/share/mime/subclasses, as there aren't nearly enough entries in mimeinfo.cache to cover all of the types, but that might take me a while.

Thoughts?

Re: LXDE - missing associations for mimetypes

Post#9 by fanthom » 31 Jan 2011, 16:47

hello Ahau,

nice finding (again) - this is the best method and should sort our this issue :)
i will add 'update-desktop-database' function to /etc/rc.d/rc.M
Just one problem found so far: after updating of mimeinfo.cache file, htmls are associated with konqueror while we dont have this app in 64bit box. Will have to track it down.
Please add [Solved] to your thread title if the solution was found.

Thanks, fanthom!

fanthom, I'll dig a little more into the html issue with konqueror.

Posted after 26 minutes 50 seconds:
konquerer may have been removed from the system, but you still have the following .desktop entries:

Code: Select all

kfmclient.desktop
kfmclient_dir.desktop
kfmclient_html.desktop
kfmclient_war.desktop
These files are related to konqueror: http://developer.kde.org/documentation/ ... lient.html
kfmclient is a small utility for communicating with Konqueror from the command line, or from scripts. It can control Konqueror to a high degree using an API similar to that provided to C++ programmers by the Konqueror class. kfmclient is part of the kdebase package, so you can rely on it's presence on any system running KDE.
The reason why it's still named kfmclient and not konqclient is so that scripts written for KDE 1.x still run with KDE 2.x
Note that all this help is also available from kfmclient itself, if you run kfmclient --commands
kfmclient_html lists MimeTypes text/html;application/xhtml+xml;application/xml;, so update-desktop-database inserts these into the mimetypes.cache file. I'd imagine all of the kfmclient desktop entries could be deleted, but I would add any essential mimetypes to another applications' .desktop entry (e.g. mozilla, kwrite or leafpad) to make sure those filetypes are still recognized when update-desktop-database is run--so long as those applications can, in fact, open those filetypes.
Please take a look at our online documentation, here. Suggestions are welcome!

Re: LXDE - missing associations for mimetypes

looks like 'kfmclient' package is really not needed in default ISO - will be removed in next release :)
Thanks a lot Ahau - great work again.
