Printing: an opportunity to increase membership

New features which should be implemented in Porteus; suggestions are welcome. All questions or problems with testing releases (alpha, beta, or rc) should go in their relevant thread here, rather than the Bug Reports section.

@francois
http://ponce.cc/porteus/x86_64/modules/
is the link to old porteus-1.2 repo. please do not perform direct downloads anymore and use PPM for this purpose.
system-config-printer and all dependencies are in porteus-2.0 repo for sure - please check through PPM in porteus-2.0.
Please add [Solved] to your thread title if the solution was found.

francois wrote:@fanthom: I do not see system-config-printer, foomatic-filters, notify-python, pycups, pycurl in ponce's repository for x86-64, neither I can get to them thru PPM:
http://ponce.cc/porteus/x86_64/modules/

In addition, more recent versions of gutenprint and ghostprint, thus gutenprint-5.2.9-x86_64-1.txz, ghostscript-9.05-x86_64-3.txz are available in slackware 14.0. For more precision on the package version that I did use, see:

@fanthom:
I will correct the above post with pleasure. :)

Sorry but are you sure that the above mentioned files are synchronised to PPM set to slaxware 14.0? I am unable to access. :(

In addition, some files for which I made a link are not even accessible from PPM:

Code: Select all

system-config-printer, dbus-python, foomatic-filters, notify-python, pycairo, pycups, pycurl, pygobject, pygtk, python

@fanthom:
Sorry about that. It came to my mind, but it seems my subconcious did not want to replace the changes folder.

Corrections done in the precedent posts. And an addition to 12th post on the first page of this thread: there is great lot more to the printer drivers than I thought on crunchbang and ubuntu. In addition, this system-config-printer tool was originally developped by redhat-fedora.

@all:
TESTING OF BROTHER PRINTER DCP-7020:
- The gui did not even select the brother manufacturer, but the Canon manufacturer pixma mg6200. For sure the printer did not worked. This seem to have to do with the fact that going thru the list of brother printers, the next list being canon (canon is just after brother, form b to c.
- Evidently, the print test did not work selecting the canon pixma.
- Resorting for troubleshooting to openprinting site proposed to download a ppd for the DCP-7020:
http://www.openprinting.org/printer/Bro ... r-DCP-7020
- Upon installation of the ppd the printer was fully functional.
- Comment: the system-config-printer interface is simpler to handle than the CUPS interface. Under the debian distribution the brother DCP-7020 printer is found without error. I think some packages are missing in our porteus print pack. Using the overall foomatic package:
http://forum.porteus.org/viewtopic.php?f=61&t=2083
I stay in the brother manufacturer but I am proposed the DCP-7025, which does not fit.

Thanks.

Here are interesting data that might help us decide amongst the printer packages to provide to our users. According to Larry Dingan from zdnet, in his article HP grabs printer market share:
http://www.zdnet.com/blog/btl/hp-grabs- ... hare/38724
Up to 85% of the printers of the market are produced in decreasing order of importance by hp (41%), canon (19%), epson (14%), samsung (6%) and brother (5%) manufacturers, the rest of the printer business being shared by other manufacturers (15%)

In summary, it is good to make sure to cover well these five printers manufacturers, and make sure you have a good emphasis on hp, canon and epson. 8)
