Newby's Sound & Net Woes

Post#1 by Dan » 28 Jan 2013, 08:09

G'day All

I am a Linux newbie, and have been tinkering with Linux a little while. I am still scared of the console, and have momentarily placed the "SAVE FILE" in Porteus inaccessible place. I'll fix that later.

I currently have had best success with an old Slax OS and Porteus2.0 (can't wait to try 3.0), which are both really quick to boot from USB thumb drives, and just as smooth to use. I also use Puppy, Mint (Not particularly successful yet), and Ubuntu (which looks nice, but is a slug to boot, and just as slow to use).

I have three old CPU towers. A HP Pavilion a1120a with 2gb RAM, and two other different computers, with similar Specs. All three have had their long ago deceased Windows HDDs removed, so a portable USB Linux OS seems like the way to play.

None get me sound, nor internet access. Slax initially did get me sound for awhile, from the back output of the tower, after a procedure, about a year ago. What can I do ? Is there an obscure driver ? Will I need to install a Linux compatible sound card ? Help ?

I'm trying to connect to the home internet wireless router, using a Netgear a1120a wireless USB adaptor.

My goal is a fully functional USB portable OS, for those 3 old dinosaurs set up in the Man Cave 8), with VLC OpenOffice (maybe even printer to my wireless Epson), a Pdf and eBook reader, a Snez emu, easy internet accessibility, to back up, and burn my DVD movies, and music CDs.

I can't wait to play with the apparently, easier module installer, and tinker with the Byzantium add-on when I have overcome these issues.

Thanks

Dan

Sorry.

Quick correction . . . the USB Netgear Wireless network adaptor I'm trying to use to connect to my home ADSL router is a WNA3100,

the HP Pavilion Tower is the a1120a

Thanks for any available help forthcoming

hello Dan,

we need to get more details about your PC's.
please go to 'Porteus Settings Centre' and generate full system report for each PC (answer 'No' to question about automatic uploading), upload '/root/Desktop/psinfo_report.txt' to pastebin.com and link here.

thanks

I couldn't find where to generate a full system report, nor where to type " '/root/Desktop/psinfo_report.txt", but found the above info, within the Porteus Settings Centre . . . I hope the above is what you were looking for !

Thanks

I found a really old soundcard CREATIVE CT4810 and ready to put in, in case the issue turns out to be an incompatibility issue . . . maybe for a plan B

@Dan

i would really prefer log files as there may be a couple reasons of the problems (hardwre and software related).

please open PSC -> click on the "star" icon (second from right) -> click 'Dump full report' -> answer 'no' -> upload created file to pastebin.com -> post URL here.

thank you.

@Dan

unfortunately that's not enough.

please try to follow this sequence:

Code: Select all

boot Porteus -> open Porteus Settings Centre -> click on the "star" icon (second from right) -> click 'Dump full report' -> answer 'no' -> save /root/Desktop/psinfo_report.txt on your usb stick -> switch to windows/other OS where you have internet connection -> upload saved report to pastebin.com -> post URL here
let me know if you stuck somewhere.
Please add [Solved] to your thread title if the solution was found.

Cannot find the Star icon, second from right is an "information" icon . . . when I think I've followed your instructions and say no, I can't find where it goes, to save it to a findable place . . . I searched High and Low. I hope this is what you need.

Thanks again

Dan

@Dan
Cannot find the Star icon, second from right is an "information" icon
so you must be using Porteus-1.2 (i got confused as your profile says: Distribution: 2.0).
anyway - report got dumped to /root/Desktop folder and in order to access it please logout and login back as root (password is toor) and it will be placed straight on your desktop.
copy psinfo_report.txt to your usb stick (it should be mounted in /mnt/sdXY folder or /media/something) and proceed with my instructions posted above.
Please add [Solved] to your thread title if the solution was found.

I have (finally) gotten the required report onto a USB Stick, but now find I can't copy/paste to this reply window . . . ? I can open the text file, then cut and paste the actual text,but then tells me it is over 60000 characters, so cannot be posted. i.e. too large. I feel it is all so close.

So now, how do I get this report to here ?
