Power management for Porteus-2.0

New features which should be implemented in Porteus; suggestions are welcome. All questions or problems with testing releases (alpha, beta, or rc) should go in their relevant thread here, rather than the Bug Reports section.

Power management for Porteus-2.0

Post#1 by fanthom » 03 Dec 2012, 12:29

I'm currently working on a power management for Porteus-2.0 and need a help from the community.
i would like to configure Porteus to reduce LCD brightness when laptop is running on battery and set maximum value when on AC.
(kde4 has powerdevil for this task but other DE's are lacking so we need to fill this gap)
unfortunately settings may differ between laptop brands thus i need to ask you for a help.

if you are an laptop owner then please post a result of following command:

Code: Select all

cat /sys/class/backlight/acpi_video0/max_brightness
if you get an error saying 'file not found' then please post output of:

Code: Select all

ls -1 /sys/class/backlight
thanks in advance.
Please add [Solved] to your thread title if the solution was found.

I don't have powerdevil in my Toshiba Satellite and my output is
root@porteus:~# cat: /sys/class/backlight/acpi_video0/max_brightness: No such file or directory
The second output is
root@porteus:~# ls -1 /sys/class/backlight
radeon_bl@

EDIT: I did find some traces of powerdevil, but I dont know if it is complete:
root@porteus:~# find /usr -name powerdevil*
/usr/lib/kde4/powerdevilbrightnesscontrolaction_config.so
/usr/lib/kde4/powerdevildimdisplayaction_config.so

Porteus is proud of the FASTEST KDE ever made.....(take akonadi, nepomuk and soprano out and you will have a decent OS).

as you can see numbers and adapters vary a lot so going with a static values makes no sense.
i'll make laptop-mode-tools to discover and use first entry found in /sys/class/backlight (in most cases it will be acpi_video0) and reduce brightness by 33% while on battery.
i hope it wont be too dark so if that's the case then please shout loud in rc1 feedback thread once rc1 ISO is released.

thanks a lot for the great feedback guys.
