Cinnamon 64-bit ISO changes=EXIT

1. In the prior releases commands like this:

Code: Select all

cp -a --parents /etc/usm/* /tmp/mod/
cp -a --parents /var/usm/ /tmp/mod/
did not result in errors like this:

Code: Select all

2. In Nemo clicking on a .txt or .sh file then selecting Display brings up the file in Mousepad. The 1st time this is done Mousepad opens the file immediately. But when clicking on a different file later Mousepad takes longer to open. And longer still as other files are opened. And this is with the files being opened one at a time and closed before the next file is opened. It's as if Mousepad is looping on something.

3. Sometimes when shutting down the system basically aborts. There is no message about 3 seconds to save changes, or about how full the save.dat file is. I suspect this problem is caused by the Mousepad problem noted above. I think the changes are saved but to be honest I'm not sure.

4. When using the Porteus save file manager (Should be Porteus SaveFile Manager IMO) to create a new save.dat file for a install on a US drive the manager notes at the end that the porteus.cfg file needs to be updated. But it doesn't do the update or note which line to be changed or even denote where the .cfg file is. I thought this was to be addressed when discussed in one of the rc releases.

In Mate 64bit it took 5 min to boot up. And after it did boot up I try to connect with WiFi and it would not let me. So far that the only bug I found.

I made 2 4gb ext4 USB Porteus Mate 64bit boot USB today. The first was v3.2.2 and it took 5 min to boot up and the other was v3.2rc5 and it took 30 sec to boot up. What can be the problem? That was in Graphics mode.

UPDATE:
I just try v3.2.2 again in Always fresh boot up in 2 min and had WiFi.
Then I try v3.2.2 again in Graphic mode and it never booted up and waited 10 min.
I just like Slackware because I think it teach you about Linux to build packages where Ubuntu is like Windows you just install programs you want.

Sounds more like a modules conflict than a bug then. Maybe starting a new thread to address it would be useful.

This started with v3.2, v3.2.1 and v3.2.2 and my last good version was 3.2rc5. There is something wrong here.

UPDATE:
I know it not 001 002 or 003 in those version because I can move them to or replace them in 3.2rc5 and it work just fine. I think it is in the boot or 000-kernel in those other version's. This is my $0.02.

Jack it is most definitely in one of these.

Unfortunately there is not much I can do as I don't control the kernel. I suggest that you download the latest slackware-current kernel-firmware package
http://packages.slackware.com

Turn this into a module and place it in your modules folder. It will avoid any problems with missing firmware for most hardware. Other than that all you can do is stay with the kernel from rc5 unless someone can help you troubleshoot the error messages and track down the problem.

@brokenman,

The kernel in v3.2rc5 is newer then the Slackware current version. All I wanted is be or have a 100% Porteus current.

I found that Ubuntu use a 4.9 kernel. I will time it or see if it will work for me.

I'm downloading it right now.

UPDATE:
Did a test here is the output and they were all USB.

1 Try Porteus Mate v3.2rc5 boot up in about 30 sec in Graphics mode the kernel was 4.7.2.
2 Try zesty-desktop-amd64.iso boot up in about 1 min or a little longer in Try first mode the kernel was 4.9.
3 Try Porteus Mate v3.2.2 and never boot up Graphics mode in Graphics mode the kernel was 4.9.

Ubuntu is about 4 times larger that why it might have taken longer.

UPDATE: 1
How I found this out I rebuilt Mate. I took the boot from v3.2rc5 and use 001, 002 and 003 from v3.2.2 after I got done it boot up great like a complete v3.2rc5 but not a complete up-to-date version. It booted up in 25 sec this way the way I like it.
I just like Slackware because I think it teach you about Linux to build packages where Ubuntu is like Windows you just install programs you want.

On a system that needs to load a firmware file for the wireless controller to work, (eg: Ralink RT3290LE 802.11bgn that needs to load firmware rt3290.bin), if a restart is performed, wifi does not work after the restart.
dmesg shows:

Wifi works fine if a shutdown and a cold reboot is perfomed.

Could this be because of the new feature of NetworkManager-1.4.4 that supports restarting without connection disruption?

Did not see this on a system that did not have to load a firmware file for wlan. (A system with broadcomm wireless controller with wl as the driver).

Reproducibility: Always

Thanks always for the great work with porteus !
I don't know if this problem is only mine or not, but i didn't had with the previuos kernels.
The system after a random time freezes and the solution is to hw reboot.
Here is my syslog

I'v founded on internet to put xxx.conf in modprobe.d
# disable autoload of ipv6
alias net-pf-10 off
I'm trying to do it.
I've tryed this solution , but it is not good.
After a while the system freezes..... the ping http://www.google.com for example goes gut, but wget doesn't download nothing and the freezes
I've also tried to to compile latest nvidia driver excluding neuveau, but nothing changes
I'm desperade
BYE

With 4.9.4 kernel all seems being resolved, probably the bug was only with i915 intel

XFCE-4.9.0-porteus i686

not a bug but..
The Folders
/var/log/removed_packages/
and
/var/log/removed_scripts/
contain all the old broadcom-sta files (4.6.1 - 4.8.11)

should be cleaned up (next iso) to avoid wh files

In xfce environment
Vbox module builder does not work.

Use of update-vbox will build a functional vbox module which will issue the following 2 errors for 64bit guest on 64 bit host:
1.0 error /sbin/vboxconfig
root@porteus:/home/guest# /sbin/vboxconfig
vboxdrv.sh: Building VirtualBox kernel modules.
vboxdrv.sh: Starting VirtualBox services.
vboxdrv.sh: Starting VirtualBox services.
***takes much time but eventually works. ***

2,0 Porteus guest will boot until syslinux menu, then error:

Code: Select all

... this kernel requires a x86_64 CPU, but only i686 CPU. Unable to boot.
It would be appreciated that this pattern be replicated on a second computer.

Thanks.

In Mate 64bit it took 5 min to boot up. And after it did boot up I try to connect with WiFi and it would not let me. So far that the only bug I found.
Just took 20 seconds from <enter> choosing option to root copy & load default modules set til LXDE desk top is stable.
This "feels" impressively fast.

More important, Firefox performs well with either large images or embedded video and geany does not "lag" behind typing when refreshing the screen.

However...

Cinnamon still fails when run with both hardware acceleration & dual head support enabled (and is not productive for me without both)
