I have 6 year old Acer Aspire One Netbook (2GB Ram, 256G HD, Intel Atom Processor 1.6Ghz). Currently running Windows 10, but it struggles.. Would like to extend it's life by replacing Windows 10 with Porteus, but I am not sure which desktop to use? Just want to do basic surfing, limited libre office & email (thunderbird). It's just a machine that I use on the go. Not my main machine.

Welcome to Porteus. XFCE supposed to be least demanding. :)

On my Acer Aspire One 722, and my wife's Acer Aspire One 725 Porteus 3.0.1 RazorQT work and Porteus 3.2.2 Cinnamon work. Both versions 64 bit. RazorQT 486 works on Acer Aspire One 486 10.1 machine but I don't know it's model number. I had to do some fiddling to get the wi-fi to work and the touchpad.

Rather than replacing Windows 10 with Porteus try duel booting the two systems and testing various versions of Porteus to see what works for you. Or installing Porteus to USB drives and testing them that way.

I'm planning to try a dual boot via a USB drive. I just checked to the model number. It's a Acer Aspire One D255-2DQkk with a 10.1 inch screen. Just checked the CPU spec it's a Intel Atom N450 / 1.66 GHz with L2 Cache - 512 KB and Intel NM10 Express Chipset. I think it's 32bit only as Windows System information says X86 not X64.

To support 32 bit do I need the i486 code base or can I use the i586?
Where do I get Razor from as can't see it on the download site.
Is LXDE still supported?

Sounds like my old one. And yes it is not x64.

Don't know about i586, I've never tried it. But you can from here: http://dl.porteus.org/i586/Porteus-v3.2.2/
Razor can be downloaded from here: http://dl.porteus.org/i486/archive/Porteus-v3.0.1/
I don't see LXDE on any link other than the old 3.0.1 link.
