dear porteus forum

i am a porteus newbie

and a linux newbie

i have got porteus installed on my hdd

and i have got it booting from grub2

and i have been learning about kernel parameters

okay

i am learning to use save session changes

and magic folders

okay

i did update the usm (universal slackware package manager)

and update all databases

i did manage to update to firefox 45.4.0esr

and i did put its module in /porteus/modules

and i did see its module load at startup

and it does run correctly and remember changes

okay good

but i thought you might be horrified to learn

the current contents

of my /porteus/modules folder:

gcc-4.8.2-i486-1.txz
libmpc-0.8.2-i486-2.txz
mozilla-firefox-45.4.0esr-i486-1_slack14.1.txz
mozilla-firefox-45.4.0esr-i486-bundle.xzm
multiload-ng-1.4.0-i586-xfce4-1bundle.xzm
psc-settings.xzm
usm-latest-0.0-noarch-1.txz
viewnior-1.3-i486-1gv.txz
viewnior-1.3-i486-1gv.xzm
xflux-pre.xzm

please help me

what should be in there ?

for examples only .xzm files ?

and what shouldn't be in there ?

for example all the .txz files ?

and should i convert the .txz files to .xzm files

for examples the gcc and libmpc library files ?

to be as library modules for start up ?

i am really sorry

please help me

best wishes michael

Only xzm files should be in there.

You can convert all txz files to xzm files using: txz2xzm file.txz file.xzm

thank you brokenman

i have done that now from terminal

that was quite hard work for me

i have been working hard

to prove i can configure porteus to how i like it

in order to be able to then use porteus

and get on with my project work

i am really sorry

i have discovered i am stuck in 'us' keyboard mode

and i need to be in 'en_gb' keyboard mode

but i can't access keyboard settings

from either

menu > settings > keyboard

or

menu > system > porteus settings centre

both of these options won't let me in to change anything

i have been running all updates

and rebooting my computer to check

but i still can't change my keyboard settings

please continue to help

best wishes michael

Try in command line:

Code: Select all

setxkbmap gb
setxkbmap -layout gb
and tell us if it works.

If it does you could make a script or add it to the autostart folder. What is your desktop xfce, kde?

hi francois

setxkbmap gb
setxkbmap -layout gb

yes

these terminal commands do work

thank you

my desktop is xfce

i like xfce

i am not sure where my autostart folder is ?

- i have porteus installed on a partition in my hdd

- i am booting from grub2

- i am using a save session changes folder

- and i am using magic folders

i could use the kernel parameter

kmap=gb

would that be right ?

yep that should work ... otherwise with xfce, look in the settings dialog some where for 'startup and shutdown' or something similar to put the xsetkbmap commands.
michael wrote:- i am using a save session changes folder

since a save session changes folder saves all changes, using magic folders(for some particular directory?) is not necessary...

Xfce menu > settings > session and startup > application autostart
-give a name
-setxkbmap gb
