Hello, i'm looking to install porteus, but when i put either NTFS or FAT, it needs to start in always fresh mode. Can someone tell me the best format type so that porteus saves changes (And no, i'm not going to do the save thingy since i'm installing porteus to a usb because my family pc's hard drive is broken)

Welcome to Porteus. Which version of Porteus do you wish to install?

I don't know if your question got fully answered elsewhere but, I try to explain best I can.

Okay, first thing. Porteus cannot save changes on a FAT32 or NTFS formatted drive directly I'm afraid since Linux isn't designed for them. Your only choice is using the save dat container you can have on the FAT32/NTFS USB same time. I have mine in the porteus folder on my USB drive.

Do note that NTFS has lessor compatibility than FAT format. However FAT32 can only have a file size lessor than 4gb. So basically as follow for choice of USB device format:
FAT32 = smaller file size limit (< 4gb), great compatibility with other devices.
NTFS = larger file size limit (> 4gb), lessor compatibility with other devices.

For the dat container. I've had no issue with EXT4 or XFS. However after researching and when I had help resizing a container, XFS seems best suggestion. I'm using XFCE desktop, so if it XFS not available EXT4 should be fine.

If you wondering what I'm using. Currently FAT32 USB drive with XFS 1gb dat container.

Hope this helps.

There is no need for a save.dat container with linux file system.
