I love the speed at which Porteus boots from my USB stick but not happy with the out of date browsers. When will the new Porteus that allows software updates be available?

Have you tried the pre-release rc3?

Thanks for the info. Hopefully it will allow browser updates that can be saved to persistence.

Yes it does. I am using the latest opera developer version. Lightning fast. It's as easy as opening a terminal and typing: update-opera

Just to confirm firm that future Opera and other browser updates will be available to download and save in persistence. I haven't managed to download the new version of Porteus as I am abroad. Thanks for the info.

There are scripts for all popular browsers. The scripts allow you to download the latest version of the browser and create a Porteus module. Persistence will depend on you using the changes= cheatcode.

Hi lobsters15.

Updating certain components can be done from a console.

Code: Select all

update-chrome
update-opera
update-firefox
update-palemoon
update-wps-office
update-libreoffice

* You have to be Superuser, and you can also do this from a terminal in the GUI. Open a terminal

Code: Select all

su
# At password prompt give 'toor'.

Please note that these scripts only exist in the new Porteus-v3.2rc2+ and NOT in Porteus-v3.1

I have just returned from my holiday and able to try out the XFCE and KDE versions of the new version of Porteus. However these downloads do not have browsers like Opera, Chrome etc and no Lbre Office. Where do I find the download sites that allow me to choose the browser and which will allow me browser updates ?

I am a complete newbie as I mentioned earlier on. I would appreciate if you could explain what to do in a little more detail.

I should have mentioned that I did try to install chrome by going to the terminal and typing sudo apt-get install chrome.
This did not work. I appreciate this is a forum for skilled Linux people but with Newbie questions an allowance should be made for a decided lack of Linux knowledge. I do like the fast boot of Porteus and its persistence and portability and I would like to be able to make good use of it in the future. Thanks for any help.
