regarding cd to /tmp
thanks for that extra info but now ignore it as when you read your previous post it says
Using config file: "/root/xorg.conf.new
so either the X -configure is somehow deciding to /root and not /tmp but its there for all to see.
For that same reason its not much use looking into /tmp for a file called /root/something

However when you are in text mode again...if you have not lost patience :)

after the X -configure line fails.....it should take you to a prompt right?
so try this

find / -name xorg.conf.new

I suspect it will return /root/xorg.conf.new.....and /root is the home folder to root.

Let us know your thoughts

My mistaken confusion; I was ignoring the fact that I was in an "Always Fresh" session. In connection with that (I suppose), I now seem to have corrupted the flash drive by issuing

Code: Select all

cp /root/xorg.conf.new /dev/sdb1
cp /var/log/Xorg.0.log /dev/sdb1
from the terminal in an attempt to preserve these files. The commands completed without error; the file system was FAT32 -- why should that have made the flash drive unmountable (and for it no longer to boot successfully)?

Hi
I now seem to have corrupted the flash drive by issuing
snip

cp /var/log/Xorg.0.log /dev/sdb1
where did we suggest you issue that command syntax...../dev/sdb1
:wall:

Its possible you have not understood a lot about Linux and maybe you need to do some basic reading about filesytems before you change my commands to your commands?
I can not help you if you won't do as I ask.....that might sound rude but you are not helping.

############################################################
relevant info follows

internal or usb drives are seen as /dev/sd<letter>
The linux kernel will allocate a letter beginning with a ......and then b then c etc
Normally internals get the first letters then usb.

Mount points are where you can either read or write to a hard drive or usb stick
Depending on the distro.....when you insert a usb stick......Nemesis wil try to use
/mnt/sd<letter><number>

eg /mnt/sdb1 but you also have folders or directories that change from usb to usb
and on page one I said
(optional with false name made up )
so you don't write to /mnt/sdb1 but /mnt/sdb1/<real-dir-name> and I don't know the names on your stick

so if you don't tell me you don't know what to use....the best thing to do in the future is say I don't know what to do and wait.

However, my problem not yours is that I have little patience or time to try out a old Slackware based system.....
I notice your disto is now showing up as Nemesis....but maybe you might be better off reading more about Linux and or trying out a more mature distro like
Ubuntu Xubuntu or Kubuntu?

I suggest your reading might start here
http://www.linux-tutorial.info/modules. ... pageid=224

#######################################################################

If you have a windows computer and put the usb stick into it.....it "should" detect its corrupt and offer to reformat it

otherwise install a package called gparted and run it with root powers to format it.

oops I nearly forgot how old your card is.

Instead of ubuntu type distros why not have a read of this distro...which also uses modules
http://wiki.tinycorelinux.net/wiki:getting_started
http://tinycorelinux.net/downloads.html
I assume you might need wireless (wifi) so choose the 32 bit coreplus but look at the forums first to see if you think you can handle it

Good luck

@aus9,

I can't agree with your assessment on this. I quite often copy files to a USB stick as in: 'cp [whatever] /dev/sdc1'..../dev/sdc1 is the first partition, and whether copying to /, or to a directory, makes no difference. I've also copied to a fat32 USB with no problems.

In this case, the USB stick could be corrupted because it was a fat32 filesystem....I've found fat32 to be somewhat delicate as compared to an ext3, or similiar.

It's possible the stick was removed while files were still copying to it.....it's possible that the stick was a piece of crap.

I do however completely agree that some reading and research is needed by the OP regarding Linux and it's usage. It ain't Windows....it doesn't work out of the box for every machine.....new equipment doesn't always have the needed drivers available in the Linux kernel....and there is little that the Porteus developer can do about what the kernel developers include in the kernel.

Edit:...I think older equipment is becoming more and more unsupported by the newer kernels and I have to wonder if a machine as old as the OP's will be able to run a modern system in a useable manner.

Yes, it was suggested that I save /root/xorg.conf.new and /var/log/Xorg.0.log and I attempted to do so with my utterly inadequate knowledge of the terminal.

I am installing versions of Porteus on three different machines, but I am not confusing which version I am discussing; on this Celeron M with S3 ProSavageDDR, it is x86 Porteus 3.1 xfce, full stop.

I was just trying to dump those two files to the root of /sdb1 with:

Code: Select all

cp /root/xorg.conf.new /dev/sdb1
cp /var/log/Xorg.0.log /dev/sdb1
where I thought they would reside with the /boot and /porteus folders of the Porteus on that drive.

I reinstalled Porteus to the corrupted flash drive, prepared another as an empty ext2 drive, booted to text mode off the first flash drive, and issued:

Code: Select all

X -configure
mount /dev/sdc1
cp /root/xorg.conf.new /dev/sdc1
cp /var/log/Xorg.0.log /dev/sdc1
All commands (after "X -configure") completed without error -- now the formerly ext2-formatted drive I hoped might contain xorg.conf.new and Xorg.0.log is corrupted.

Clearly I don't understand why this procedure fails to save copies of the desired files so that their contents may be examined -- I also issued:

Code: Select all

cat /root/xorg.conf.new
but the contents scroll off the screen and I'd have to scribble them down (or take a screenshot with my phone if they didn't and subsequently transcribe them) in order to reproduce them here. In decreasing order of importance:

1. Tell me a better way to save copies of these files and I will be happy to try it!
2. I wouldn't mind knowing precisely what was wrong with my attempt to use basic Linux commmands from the terminal to copy files.
3. Is there some useful purpose in Linux served by having my (rather intuitive, IMO) attempted application of "mount" and "cp" be a valid one (completing without complaint or error) but accomplishing some completely different purpose (resulting in this case in the corruption of the flash drives to which I was trying to save copies of the requested files), or is this just one of Linux's internal perversities?

I'm not interested in tinycore on this machine; other than the problem with the motherboard-mounted S3, the machine should be able to run Porteus swimmingly; its Celeron is overclocked to a blazing 1.83GHz and the motherboard is maxed out with 2GB of ECC DDR RAM I got for $3 off eBay. I have a fourth machine (having previously mentioned my Celeron M, Kangaroo, and Toshiba Satellite laptop in these forums in connection with Porteus); an even older eMachines T1220 with a Celeron running at 1.2GHz and only 384MB of SDRAM -- it runs Porteus 3.1 xfce quite nicely from a frugal installation on HD with a swap partition.

P.S. I have fifth machine; an even older Celeron III with 256MB of SDRAM; if I were to try an even smaller Linux out, it would be on it, but it would need support for an ancient Trident VGA video card, which none of the Linuxes I tried on it would support -- unless Porteus can be made to.

Code: Select all

    X -configure
    mount /dev/sdc1
    cp /root/xorg.conf.new /dev/sdc1
    cp /var/log/Xorg.0.log /dev/sdc1
You need a directory for saved files to be on the safe side:

Code: Select all

mount /dev/sdc1 /mnt/sdc1
# Create a directory 'saved', say
mkdir /mnt/sdc1/saved
cp /root/xorg.conf.new /mnt/sdc1/saved
cp /var/log/Xorg.0.log /mnt/sdc1/saved

@rchase

You could also try this:

After you run X --configure, run 'mc'.....that will give you a console based filemanger to use in finding and copying the file.

It uses the function keys for navigation......F3 to view a file....F4 to edit....F5 to copy.....F6 to move a file. The tab key is used to switch panels and the enter key opens directories......the enter key also executes any file that is executable, so care is needed.

Personally, I wouldn't trust the USB stick.

In my experience, when Linux is told to mount something, it does that....it does nothing apart from that....same with copying, thats all it does. I don't think Porteus corrupted the USB stick....I use them regularly and have for many years. It has never happened to me.

Thanks; I will do that. As for Porteus corrupting the flash drives, I am certain of it; I started from a fresh, Rufus-installed copy of x86 Porteus 3.1 xfce, edited the cheatcodes for graphics mode at boot to put "3" after "changes=/porteus", proceeded into text mode, and issued those commands, and the result was the same both times. I am not satisfied with the explanations of why those commands didn't work, why a directory is needed, or why "cp" corrupted those drives (these explanations not having been proffered), but I will gladly try both the console-based file manager and a separate flash drive preformatted to ext2 with an empty directory named "test" in its root. I will do this now.

I didn't see how to use Midnight Commander to access the flash drive; it had been mounted first. When I attempted to copy to /dev/sdc1/test, this time I received an error message claiming that /test wasn't a directory. I mounted /dev/sdc1 to /mnt and managed to copy both files to /test; I suppose that the error relates to mount points as opposed to directories, but the directory was both created and accessed as root.

Finally, the contents of /root/xorg.conf.new and /var/log/Xorg.0.log:
