Newbie in Porteus... coming from Ubuntu

I'm trying to install new packages, but in the USM I can't.
There is a tutorial that shows it in https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1UbRVX_3nnY
but when I execute it all I have is:

And then:

Which Database I need to restore?
How can I fix it?

I need to instal Tcl/Tk package, Gimp and some other packages as well.

Thanks for your help!

Welcome from Ubuntu.

In root terminal:

Code: Select all

usm -u all
Then try GUI again

Looks like ponces mirror was unavailable at the time you tried. Two options.

1) Wait a few hours and try again
2) Try another mirror in /etc/usm/mirrors-ponce.txt

If I recall booting the ISO the first time can do this. There are no USM database files in it. One has to run the USM GUI menu's Updates for Update USM and Update All options before beginning to use USM. Not a big deal.

I have wait many hours and I have try many times on different hours and no way.
I have changed the ponces server to mirrors and no way.

I have this error first time that I run USM, and I can't create a database, as you can see at the beggining of the post.

Please, help me guys...
As long as i have tried, I like Porteus distro, but if I can't charge Tcl and Gimp, at least, i will search for any other Live distro.
I don't want to return to Ubuntu...

Thanks

This is not a server issue IMO so waiting isn't going to help.

How are you booting Porteus? ISO file? USB drive install? ?

How are you trying to update the USM app and database? USM GUI or USM CLI?

Ok. Have you clicked on Updates>Update USM?

First of all, I have updated USM.
Then reboot (just in case it was the issue).
Then try to update all, and no way.
Always, when it tries to create the database (I assume) decompressing the .gz file, it shows that error saying that it´s not a gzip file, so I don´t understand what can be the issue.

I can understand that on a new installation, maybe you need to update USM.
I can understand that after update it, it needs to create a new database, but I don´t understand why it can´t.

Thanks for your patience.

Reboot is over kill. But you do need to recycle USM.

So you are running USM 3.1.9.

Ok, rather than using the Update All option try to update the databases one by one. If one causes a problem, try the next one.

No maybe about it.

That's the key question at this point.

Are you doing this on a home pc or one at work, school, pub, etc.?
Thanks for your patience.
Thank you for yours. :)

I´m trying to running it in my personal computer (laptop, i5, 8Gb Ram, 1TB HD, nVidia GC, Ubuntu desktop + MS WIndows 10) as well as in my work laptop (i5, 4 Gb Ram, 500 GB HD, Intel HD GC, MS Windows 7).

My original idea is to remove Ubuntu (It´s getting very commercial, I prefer Slackware) but i don´t want to run again on my laptop, as I need to use a root menu to choose between S.O. and I wasting to much time when I forgot it. Then I google for a Live and light Linux Distro and Porteus was the one with a better feedback.

My feedback: 80's -> MSDOS mainly; 90's Microsoft systems + Slackware or SUSE; 2000's Microsoft systems + SUSE and Ubuntu at latest; 2010's Microsoft systems and Ubuntu.

Returning to the USM issue:

Now, I´m at work, so I can´t check Porteus Distro, but, I have downloaded it from Porteus server (desktop version) yesterday, so the actual version. (On Porteus Webpage, it says 3.1 but not minor revision).

I have try in several ways from a brand new downloaded distro:
1. Try to update all at once. No way.
2. Try to update one by one, beginning from USM update. Same result.
3. Try to update from console mode. Same result.

Like "brokeman" exposed, I have try on different hourly bands, and same result.

I have tried that at home with my personal laptop and in my work laptop. My work laptop is under domain, with firewall (logical and physical) and all my company security issues, and my personal laptop has 2 different setups depending on the O.S. but I have tried in both and even, I had more problems trying from Ubuntu than Windows.

At least you have downloaded a few databases. Please try:
usm - g abiword

And report the output.
