Hello all.
Everytime i start porteus, it scans the disk- even with the "nohd" and "noswap" cheats!
When proteus scans, the hd makes a horrible rattling/scratching noise that continues long after i've logged in(and as a result, slows down my session).
I know my disk is pretty damn DEAD already but i have windows 7 on it and still love it. Planning on getting a new hdd but thats still a way off.
I've used porteus with the drive taken out and it seems that porteus does try to access the drive in some way(that i dont yet understand!)
My question is, can i make porteus NOT read the disk at all???
can i make it work completely from the usb and not try to use ANYTHING on the hdd?
Btw, Thanx for the great OS and forum y'all. Super helpful!
TJ

Hi TJ
--> I've used porteus with the drive taken out and it seems that porteus does try to access the drive in some way (that i dont yet understand!) <--
If an OS find a (SATA / IDE) controller on the MoBo it will check this controller for
connected Devices. If no Device is connected, it does this till it Timed-out.
Depending on other Devices you may have (CD/DVD Drives) connected to
the same (or a different) controller, (e.g. DVD = IDE and/or HDD = SATA),
you could disable the HDD controller in the BIOS.
But only if no other Devices are connected to the same controller.

Re: Hard drive problem
thanx for the help donald.
I put that machine on a shelf (and out of mind) these past couple months but I'll be sure to take a look at your suggestion.
been using porteus on my other pc and I must admit that I like it more everyday. when I have more experience i'd like to help keep it going- there's certainly a bit that could be added to the help file that'll help Linux newbs.
I'll check in the bios and update soon.
