It should be noted to anyone considering doing this. Windows XP is obsolete and no longer supported by Microsoft. This means if freshly installed it will have NONE of the security updates Microsoft released for it over the past decade. i.e. It is a major security risk if used online.

Ed, who do you try to scare? Most people people on this forum are vaccinated adults. Isn't it? This is not a ubuntu forum. 8)

I have no way of knowing whether a Linux distro is secure or not.

I use a number of free anti virus/spyware apps when I use Windows XP/7. I might as well mention them here: AVG, Malwarebytes, Clamwin, ADWCleaner and JRT, not to mention Win defender. I regularly run them manually, except AVG, which has realtime scan. (Let me know if you know of another reliable, trusted anti-virus/malware app and I will add it in my arsenal.) They're also the ones I use when I fix old PC's that were made unusable because of viruses. Believe it or not, one or two of these programs caught more than 300 spywares/viruses of an infected PC.

Running various anti-virus apps is logical. You'll never know whether they are actually spywares or not. So they detect each other out and you can also determine whether a virus flag is a false positive or not.

You can't do such thing in a linux environment. Clamwin is not enough.

PS

BTW, I haven't used XP in a very long while. I use Windows 7.
Just wish distros would copy things that are good in XP.

As an amusing addendum....

I just bought Windows 8.1 and installed it on their computers. :P

It's a somewhat complicated story as to why, but I'll just say that it suddenly made sense to do and I found it at a really good price.

Anyway, their computers seem snappy and responsive now compared to how they were under WinXP. :Yahoo!: So WinXP is no longer in use in our house (except for in a Virtual Machine. I'm keeping it on life support, just to be mean).

Thanks for the help, though.

I'm trying to warn/scare anyone who might find this thread via a Google/Bing/Yahoo/ search and wish to install an old Windows XP CD onto a Linux machine. Not talking about installing a Linux system on an existing XP machine, the opposite situation.

Me either, but assume it is for the most part.
I use a number of free anti virus/spyware apps when I use Windows XP/7.
I also. Windows Defender and avast! for XP and Windows Security Essentials for Windows 7 and 8. Plus Malwarebytes scans on all 3. I use to use AVG but found avast! to have less overhead on the slower machines.

Thanks for the update rgroner. :good: Happy to hear XP has been put to rest.
