Taking the Leap

Post#1 by hitsware » 04 Dec 2014, 20:53

Greetings ,
I have been using LXDE now for some time (in my laboratory)
with my best luck ever with Linux.
My other PC (XP(on which I now type (in the house)))
is starting to show signs of coming failure.
I am thinking of going Porteus only on my new system,
but I must consider my Wife's needs and tastes, since
this is 'her' PC.
She needs:
1) Bing
2) online maps of driving directions
3) email client
4) printing facility
5) word processor
Is there any one version of Porteus that would give her
an easier transition from XP than any other and most
stability-robustness ? I'm especially concerned about the
printing, since I've read of some problems in that area.
Thank You,
Michael Miller

Hello histware:

1) Bing
Is possible with firefox browser.
2) online maps of driving directions
Google maps!!
3) email client
Trojita
4) printing facility
printing.xzm
5) word processor
libreoffice suite

You could use kde environment for your wife and easily change the desktop environment for lxqt (lxde will be obsolete in the next 3.1 porteus version). It looks a lot like windows, it comes with firefox and trojita stock. The other modules could be easily dowloaded into the /porteus/modules folder printing.xzm and libreoffice.xzm. Online maps for driving directions, that should be available thru the webbrowser. I will look at it or someone else will. This next week porteus 3.1 should be out.

What is the printer you want to connect to the linux box?

Thank You !
Yes, the browser will produce the maps.
It's the printing them out I need to pin down.

hp deskjet d4300 series driver is in the cups list covered by the printing module. It seems that it should work.

Your intel computer is written to be supported for linux:

It looks like you have a good duo. I cannot engage my personal reputation as I do not own personally these hardware.

:D
Brought lab PC into house (typing on it now)
Where can I find .xzm for 'Trojita' ?
ClawsMail seems not quite ideal.

Printed driving directions from Bing :Yahoo!:

Trojita is available stock on the actual porteus 3.0 and on the 3.1 rc2 edition. Final 3.1 version will be available probably this weekend.

In the kde menu, trojita is available under the internet submenu: imap email client.

Yea. We've been using the Comcast mailbox and it works fine.
Maybe a little slower, and once in a while have to sign in, but
O.K. She likes it which is important .......
