Ed. First thing to try is to try again. I just tested a vanilla 3.0.1 porteus and USM updates fine.

Please give the output of: cat /proc/cmdline

Also please manually update USM to the latest version from a terminal like so:

Code: Select all

wget --trust-server-names http://sourceforge.net/projects/usm/files/usm-latest-0.0-noarch-1.xzm/download -P /tmp
installpkg /tmp//usm-latest-0.0-noarch-1.xzm

Gee, not due to .wh files!! What a surprise!! :D

When USM is experiencing this error couldn't it invoke what you are proposing automatically? Or give some kind of error msg indicating what is wrong and then the option to download and install the upgrade. Less manual intervention would be needed on your part.

Yes. A surprise. Almost sounds like the same person no?

You honestly think I am the only one USM doesn't work for? I'm just the only one willing to tell you about them so you can work on them.

Running always fresh, got into a mess with usm, by inadvertently omitting to update usm, running usm -u all froze:

Code: Select all

root@porteus:/home/guest# usm -v

root@porteus:/home/guest# usm -u all

Then removed usm-latest-0.0-noarch-1.txz from $STORAGE in the hope that update would go through, but there was no change. Deleting various usm files and combinations did not help either. In desperation installed the 3.0.1 usm package:

Code: Select all

root@porteus:/home/guest# installpkg --terse usm-latest-0.0-noarch-1.txz
usm-latest-0.0-noarch-1: [310K]

An update is available for the usm database files.
 Please run: usm -u all

Another thought for a clean restart: rm -r /var/usm/*, and for good measure delete /etc/usm/usm.conf before running installpkg on usm-latest-0.0-noarch-1.txz?

You honestly think I am the only one USM doesn't work for?
I certainly didn't say that.
I'm just the only one willing to tell you about them so you can work on them.
Check the changelogs. Plenty of people submitting valid bugs. And when I ask them to follow a procedure THEY actually do it. This is what helps me work on them, not ignoring every suggestion and then still complaining that things don't work. I stand by what I have always said and until you start doing it, I won't answer your posts anymore.

Bogomips, this should be ok. Updating manually will overwrite any existing files. Removing /var/usm/* will not hurt in relation to installation. Deleting usm.conf should not be necessary as it will be overwritten in any case. Now that you are on 3.1.6 all version checks have been removed from usm.conf and reside in a dedicated file /etc/usm/version.txt. Thanks.

Please direct all future bugs to the bug report thread or start your own thread for unrelated problems. This thread was hijacked. Future unrelated posts to this thread will be removed.

@tipark:

Sorry for this bad impression. Please don't judge us by some few lines of this thread. People are curteous and very helpful on this forum compared to the average linux forum.

The atmosphere is very seldom troubled by acrymonic exchanges. It happens that the developers once and a while, though very very patient, ask for a little more rigor from some members. They merit this right, they really work hard and share their knowledge and their work freely.

Porteus is a quite unique distribution. I hope you will enjoy the rest of your stay.

Code: Select all

wget --trust-server-names http://sourceforge.net/projects/usm/files/usm-latest-0.0-noarch-1.txz/download -P /tmp
installpkg /tmp/usm-latest-0.0-noarch-1.txz
Please change the command to the above.

EDIT:
In regards to this error:
/usr/share/usm/funcupdateDatabase: line 338: [: -gt: unary operator expected

There is only one situation where this error can be generated. Have you touched your usm.conf file at all, in any way?

Soon after install, downloaded Porteus yesterday to run off a USB with persistence, a problem with usm (3.1.9). I am using 32-bit Porteus on a 64-bit machine if that could be a problem (I plan to run it off both 32 bit and 64 bit machines):

guest@porteus:~$ sudo usm -u all

You need the following programs to continue:
installpkg
removepkg

using su command instead of sudo gives different info:

root@porteus:/home/guest# usm -u all
alien was updated 2520 seconds ago. Skipping.
salix was updated 2513 seconds ago. Skipping.
slacky was updated 2507 seconds ago. Skipping.
ponce was updated 2501 seconds ago. Skipping.

Downloading: CHECKSUMS.md5 DONE
Downloading: MANIFEST.bz2 DONE
Downloading: PACKAGES.TXT DONE
Downloading: LIBS.TXT.gz DONE
There was a problem downloading the file:

The test-package in USM doesn't download at all.

Cheers then!

Also run 32 bit on a machine capable of 64 bit.

Avoid sudo, easiest to run usm as root.
The test-package in USM doesn't download at all.
Think it's just suppoed to show in the gui.
