Hi Ed,

My guess is you want to use the SB card as default, but the other card keeps getting picked up as default instead. The "Sound Card Select" application that shipped with 2.1 wasn't able to handle systems with multiple sound cards that used the same driver, but I have since upgraded it to try addressing this issue. I'm not positive that I have a fool-proof solution, but will plan on shipping this in 3.0 RC1 for further testing. In advance of that, you can download the revised script from the link I posted here:

http://forum.porteus.org/viewtopic.php? ... und#p19522

Download the script, make it executable (chmod +x gtk-soundcard-select) and run it. You should be able to select the SB card, hit apply, and run the test to hear the sound (the test is not especially loud so you may want to turn up the speakers before trying it.) You can build a module to apply the settings on future boots if you don't have saved changes on.

HTH and please let me know how it works out for you.
Please take a look at our online documentation, here. Suggestions are welcome!

Thank you @Ahau.

I read the link, the problem it refers to is a perfect match, my pc is an Acer 722 model, I downloaded the file, ran the chmod command then wondered how do I execute it. I dbl clicked on it and it opened as a text file and I could see it is a script, so I closed it and executed it with an sh command in terminal mode and it ran. :Yahoo!:

The Default Sound Card card app opened, I selected my SB card and got an error window pop up saying I needed to Close running program... telling me one or more programs are using the sound device and to close the program and try again. The program using the device... razor-panel!!

I have no idea how to close that app.

Ok, figured it out. su, toor, pidof razor-panel. And the Default Sound Card Selector changed the default to the HDA ATI SB card but the Test option makes no sound.

Is it just the test file that isn't working (i.e. other sounds are playing) or is there still no sound at all from the system? I had another report of the system sound working but the test button making no noise, maybe the test file isn't in place for some reason. If the whole system is still without sound, please give me the output of:

cat /proc/asound/cards
cat /proc/asound/modules
cat /etc/asound.conf
cat /etc/modprobe.d/alsa_order.conf

some of those may not return a result, and that's OK. Also, please let me know if the SB card is your default and has worked with other linux OS's.

I thought I fixed the problem with getting the razor panel to shut down...will have to look into that more!

Thanks!

No sounds at all on the system.
I thought I fixed the problem with getting the razor panel to shut down...will have to look into that more!
Well I can't retest that for you. My system has apparently saved the turn off of it. :wall: Does it need to be reactivated for the sounds to work with the new driver?
If the whole system is still without sound, please give me the output of:

cat /proc/asound/cards
cat /proc/asound/modules
cat /etc/asound.conf
cat /etc/modprobe.d/alsa_order.conf

some of those may not return a result, and that's OK.

Code: Select all

guest@porteus:~$ cat /proc/asound/cards

                      HDA ATI SB at 0x90440000 irq 16
guest@porteus:~$ cat /proc/asound/modules

 1 snd_hda_intel
guest@porteus:~$ cat /etc/asound.conf

   card SB
}
guest@porteus:~$ cat /etc/modprobe.d/alsa_order.conf
cat: /etc/modprobe.d/alsa_order.conf: No such file or directory
guest@porteus:~$

Also, please let me know if the SB card is your default and has worked with other linux OS's.

I tried Porteus-XFCE-v2.1-x86_64.iso but it didn't work with my touchpad and I had to power off to reboot, so no sound testing.

I tried Porteus-KDE-v2.1-x86_64.iso and before it crashed me into console mode I was able to position the mouse pointer over the Sound icon in the task bar and it indicated that the sound was muted. But in clicking on the icon and viewing the sound setting it was not muted. Clicking the mute symbol added an X to it, clicking it again removed it. Closing the settings and putting the mouse over the sound symbol still indicated sound was muted.

In Windows for sound I see two devices enabled. Speakers, Conexant High definition Audio and AMD HDMI Output, AMD High Definition Audio Device.

Try changing your /etc/asound.conf file to the following:

pcm.!default {
type hw
card 0
}

ctl.!default {
type hw
card 0
}

You may also try changing the number 0 to 1.

You had an /etc/asound.conf file earlier (it was created by my script). Regardless, you can simply create a file at /etc/asound.conf (as root) and input the text brokenman provided, and then run '/etc/rc.d/rc.alsa restart' (also as root) to restart your sound services with the new settings.

However, the settings brokenman provided *should* have the same affect as the asound.conf file my script created ("SB" is the same as card "1" on your system). I think there might be bigger things at play here. For example, see here: http://crunchbang.org/forums/viewtopic.php?id=14372

That article is a little old, though, so it may not be relevant. another thread: https://wiki.debian.org/InstallingDebia ... ireOne_722

Also, give me the output of:

dmesg | grep -i snd
dmesg | grep -i audio
cat /proc/asound/card0/codec#0
cat /proc/asound/card1/codec#0

If you were getting sound out of porteus 2.0, it might also be this bug: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+sour ... ug/1173618 and the issue will likely be resolved when we move to 3.0.
Please take a look at our online documentation, here. Suggestions are welcome!

I found an older version of the save.dat file, prior to running your script, and am using that now.

Good question! I don't remember. If I can find my ISOs of 2.0, and 1.2, I'll give them a try and let you know.

I'm a little busy at the moment but will try all your suggestions and post their results. Thank you for your time and suggestions. :beer:

I apologize for not spending more time on this today. It is important to me but I gave managing my save.dat file a higher priority. Sorry.

And we have a winner :Yahoo!: !!

Code: Select all

guest@porteus:~$ su
Password:
root@porteus:/home/guest# sh asound.sh
Loading ALSA mixer settings: /usr/sbin/alsactl restore
root@porteus:/home/guest# sh asound.sh
Loading ALSA mixer settings: /usr/sbin/alsactl restore
root@porteus:/home/guest#
asound.sh

Code: Select all

cp -a /home/guest/asound.conf /etc/

/etc/rc.d/rc.alsa restart
asound.conf

Code: Select all

pcm.!default {
type hw
card 1
}

ctl.!default {
type hw
card 1
}
card 0 did not work.

Last question, will this change be saved in my save.dat file or will it have to be reapplied each time I boot? And if so can I put the cp command in my rc.local file?

-------

Update: Rebooted, the /etc/asound.conf file is still there.

Thank you @Ahau and @brokenman. :beer:

Excellent. This is all i had to do to get sound also. For me, i just have a script that creates this file and when i want sound i run the script.
How do i become super user?
