YT Video w/o audio HELP

Post#1 by willard » 09 Sep 2012, 18:53

Re: Porteus 1.2, XFCE_KDE/Trinity Desktop
Hi,
This ISO's Install has yet to configure sound correctly. After clicking the speaker 'volumn' menu, alsa mixer did appear, but could not enable sound. Is there something missing from original settings? Also, after launching alsa mixer, the speaker icon has dissappeared from the taskbar. How can it be restored w/o complete wipe?

Regards

Perhaps a problem of driver ?

Here is something that may help you in explaining your issue.
FAQ wrote:How do I report a bug?
Try to recreate the bug first: boot Porteus in 'always fresh mode' with only the basic Porteus modules. If you are able to recreate the error, post a bug report on the Porteus forum in the relevant section. Please attach links to screenshots and logfiles if possible (examples: /var/log/messages, /var/log/Xorg.0.log). For storing log files, please use external sites like pastebin.com and post web links only. Make sure that error was not created by a user mistake, typo, etc. - please save our free time!
Thanks !

Speakers are now functional!

Suspect Kernel patch resolved problem:
http://ponce.cc/porteus/i486/current/e ... ux-3.4.9/

Q: How can Kernel patch installation be confirmed?

This is not a patch, but an updated kernel. Glad your problem is sorted.

You can confirm it with: uname -r

Hi,

Today, the sound is non-functional! Also, the sound card alsamixer defaults to is blacklisted. Apparently it cannot save changes and appears to be the culpret.

UNAME -R:
  • guest@porteus:~$ uname -r
    3.4.4-porteus
    guest@porteus:~$
This too looks suspicious and what is the correct method to upgrade Kernel?

willard

Hi,

Since original settings cause intermittant audio, that points to alsamixer, I decided to try:
Gnome-Alsamixer from Debian. Several dependencies are missing!. PPM attempts to download them. When the router's LEDS stop blinking, I know PPM is HUNG!

Stable audio is top priority. Is there a fair & reasonable fix?

You can try this command in opened terminal and show us a screenshot of what you see or perhaps you may post your "identified" sound card:

Code: Select all

alsamixer

Hi,
'WILLARD-SOUNDFIX.XZM' RESTORED MPLAYER AUDIO, BUT NOT YT! WHAT COULD YT 'AUDIO' NEED, THAT MPLAYER DOESN'T?

By "YT", I'm assuming you mean YouTube, which plays videos through flashplayer. It might be that flashplayer has saved some settings using the wrong sound card. Please try booting without saved changes (when the bootloader opens, highlight your entry and press the tab key, and use the arrow and backspace key to remove the cheatcode, "changes=xyz/whatever"), and see if that helps. If so, there's probably some config file we can delete from your saved changes so that it will work again when you boot back in with your saved changes. HTH.
Please take a look at our online documentation, here. Suggestions are welcome!

'ALWAYS FRESH' ON XFCE OMITS THAT CHEATCODE

Ahau,
Can't this be reproduced on another machine? My WIFI needs the 'DAT' file on the USB stick.
What's Plan B? Another MAJOR audio fix needed, before next release.

@willard

blacklist 'snd_usb_audio' driver then load it through /etc/rc.d/rc.local (only if you need working MP3Streamer)

this way ATI IXP AC97 will be always set as 'card0' by udev.

Cheers

Dear fanthom:

Since leaping into the Linux World earlier in 2012, getting all the ducks to line up on the blacklist has been the key!

The only blacklist directory I'm familiar with on Porteus is for Broadcom WIFI. Please point me to the 'snd_usb_audio' blacklist directory/file? The MP3Streamer has NO capture ability and doubt it has a functional Linux driver. Therefore, it shoud have been blacklisted from the start.

@willard

everything from /etc/modprobe.d is being parsed by udev regardless of it's name.
please run:

Code: Select all

echo "blacklist snd-usb-audio" > /etc/modprobe.d/good-bear-for-fanthom.conf
and will be ok.
