I don't get to save settings

Hello

I did install Porteus on the hard disk and create a save file, but it still won't save any setting. I set it to my language, I set the menu to the bottom, but every time I reboot it sets itself back to english and the menu back to the top...

Also when I install chrome it tells me to move it to the modules folder, but that folder is read only.

Can someone help please ?

Hello Dm88, welcome to the forum.

So, some questions to help resolve this problem.

1. What's the name of the Porteus ISO file you downloaded?
2. What steps did you follow to install it to your harddrive?
3. How did you create your save file?
4. How are you booting Porteus; grub2, BIOS, EFI?
5. What is the format of the drive you installed Porteus on?
6. What is the format of the drive you created your save file on?
7. Do you multi-boot the system with Windows?

The save dat problem should be easy to fix but this one may be harder.

1. "Porteus-LXDE-v5.0-x86_64.iso"
2. I click "Porteus installer". I enter "toor". I create a partition, I leave default values : "msdos", "ext4". I let it install. I remove the install media and reboot.
3. I click "Porteus Savefile Manager". I enter "toor". "I want to create a new savefile". "settings". Really weird to have to enter a size but I enter "2". "mnt/sda1/porteus/changes/", I replace "changes=/porteus" with "changes=/mnt/sda1/porteus/changes/settings.dat" in the file. I save.

I leave default values : "msdos", "ext4".

So the partition on your harddrive is EXT4. As the Savefile Manager window says at the top of the window:
"Only required for saving changes on FATx and NTFS filesystems.". So I would say your changes are being saved on your EXT4 partition in your /porteus/changes folder.

My USB drives are FAT32 and I do use a save.dat file which is usually 512 MB.

When you turn your pc on what do you see on your screen? If you can take a picture of the screen with your cell phone post it to https://postimages.org/ and post the forum link it creates here.

Indeed there is an error about not being able to save changes :

That doesn't show me the menu you used to get to the boot point, or the APPEND options you're using. The "detected unsupported fs" is an interesting error as are the xfs, ext, rei unknown operand errors. Something is wrong with your install or the method you're using to boot it.

Can you run gparted for the sda drive and post a picture of it? Would also like to see the boot code you're using whether its grub2 or the GRAPHICAL menu of /boot/syslinux/porteus.cfg.

hi if you choose the first line in porteus menu you have the init4 and the changes activated so you don't need the save.dat,if want, this line APPEND changes=/porteus you can append it also in txt mode boot if you like terminal,and if you want to build a save.dat 512 mb is a small size try to use the xfs file system,you have a good graphic prompt to make this task and if you change the usb port maybe the name of device change APPEND changes=/mnt/sdh1/porteussave-2-2-2.dat text 3 i8042.nopnp ok try what is better for you.when you boot, before the system boot, there is the fsck check of the xfs save.dat container so you can see if it is ok.

Ok. So what does your Graphic mode menu in /boot/syslinux/porteus.cfg look like? Especially the APPEND line. Porteus will open the file in text mode so you can see it and post it.

It's possible the "detected unsupported fs" error msg implies the BIOS of your machine doesn't support booting EXT4 drives. Can you make the drive FAT32? It's the format save.dat files were designed for.

change APPEND changes=/mnt/sdh1/porteussave-2-2-2.dat

If the save.dat is on the drive being booted the /mnt/sdh1 part should not be necessary.
