[SOLVED] How can I reset mpv player settings to default?

MPV is struggling with videos on my old laptop. I suspect that mpv in porteus was configured to use fps interpolation and cpu-heavy scaling algorithms out-of-the-box. Is it possible to manually revert these settings and bring back mpv's default behaviour?

thank you, changing vo to xv or vaapi made playback smoother but cpu usage still high and there are some skipped frames

playback is smooth in porteus without updates and in porteuX

it means that something was changed in updates

do you know how to undo changes made to the mpv in update files?

or maybe there is a way to reinstall mpv with newer 0.35.1 version resetting all changes?

Hi,

mpv is currently in module

 located in Module:  002-xtra.xzm

Before the update it was the version mpv-0.34.1-x86_64-1_ncm.
As far as I can see, the config files in both modules are identical, so that's not the problem.
Therefore I would try it with a downgrade of mpv.

mpv config resides in:

/etc/mpv/mpv.conf (all users)
or
$HOME/.config/mpv/mpv.conf (logged user)

Maybe you can do a trial_&_error test (#)commenting on suspicious lines. Also moving the 'scripts' subfolder may help.

This is a mpv.conf sample:

Depending on your Hardware/Driver it may (or not) help to remove all
--video-sync=display-resample entries in /usr/local/bin/mpv_hwdec

Make a backup of that file before changing it!!

replacing updated module with original module reverts mpv 0.35.0 to mpv 0.34.1 and playback is smooth

replacing /usr/bin/mpv with the one from porteuX fixes the problem for mpv, but celluloid still eats ~95% of cpu time

by the way, mpv in porteuX consumes ~30% of cpu while mpv in porteus ~40%

based on this I think that the settings are hardcoded in mpv and celluloid and can not be reset to factory defaults

Same here. You can test options from command-line, then write them in your mpv.conf

I have this shortcut at hand to play in some scenarios where the resources are limited:

mpv --player-operation-mode=pseudo-gui --video-sync=display-resample --no-osd-bar --vo=xv --audio-file-auto=fuzzy -- %U

Using --vo=xv prevents mpv from using OpenGL and may solve some screen tearing (at the cost of quality).

@seed_clapper, can you provide your machine specs (including cpu and gpu)? Also, when you run the video that is slow (is there a link to download it?) can you press i and show us a screenshot of both smooth run and slow run?

Notice that PorteuX compiles mpv with ffnvcodec headers so it avoids playback on Nvidia cards to always fallback to nvdec-copy mode, which is slower and consumes more RAM.

On top of that, Porteus 5 uses mpv flag --video-sync=display-resample, which was my idea because it syncs the video FPS with the display refresh rate providing a non-stuttery playback, however this option takes some extra CPU cycles, so in PorteuX it has been disabled.

To run mpv without any extra command flag, just execute (via terminal, for instance): mpv [videoPath] (where '[videoPath]' is the path to your video, example: mpv /home/guest/Desktop/video.mp4).

I haven't read everything but you should give this thread a try: https://github.com/intel/intel-vaapi-driver/issues/544

It's a bit odd that using vaapi improves performance in your case since from you screenshots mpv doesn't say hardware acceleration is working -- you should be seeing 'hwdec: vaapi' like this. If you run from the terminal, is there any useful output?

Another possibility for PorteuX mpv version being faster is because it's newer. Gonna compile a new version for Porteus and share the link with you so we can better understand what's happening.

Probably the gpu is too ancient to be supported by linux. Even if it worked I would turn it off because gpu does not play 60fps videos well on Windows.

Thank you! The problem is fixed now. Cpu usage is back to usual ~40%.
