Unable to make porteus boot from flash drive [SOLVED]

I'm new to Linux and porteus looked like an easy way to get started.
However, I seem to be unable to correctly install it.
I didn't find a solution in the FAQ, installation manual or the forum. So I'm asking it here.

I'm trying to install porteus 32-bit to my flashdrive in Windows XP.
First I downloaded the Iso and extracted it with WinRar.
Then I started the win_start_here in the boot section.
However, when the cmd.exe windows opens I get a message that there is no disk. (Exception processing message c0000013 parameters 75b0bf9c 4 75b0bf9c 75b0bf9c)
I get the option to cancel, again or continue, whichever I choose, I get the same error message.
After a few times of clicking it finally works and in the end says it should be working.
But when I try to boot from the flash drive, it can't be found in the BIOS.
The strange thing is that I could choose the same flash drive in BIOS before I used the win_start_here.
Changing the flash drive doesn't help because the same error message is shown.

I have no idea about what is going wrong.
If more information is needed, let me know.
Thanks in advance.

Welcome on board Awesomeman,

this sounds like a known issue in Bill Gates camp:
click

could you try installing porteus from Virtualbox session?
all what you need to do is to install Virtualbox -> boot porteus from the ISO -> attach your usb stick -> and run 'Porteus Installer'

let us know if that worked.

Thanks for the fast reply fanthom.
Installing it from a virtualbox session seems to prevent the error message but I still get the same end-result.
The flash drive, another one btw, I used showed up in the BIOS prior to installing porteus but afterwards it's not listed.
Other ideas?

Are you using Porteus v1.1?

Be sure to format the USB drive with a FAT32 partition to start with. This will ensure windows can see it. If possible try to format the drive in windows.

Plug it in and run the Porteus installer (as administrator or with admin rights!)

Boot into your BIOS and check that the device is still recognized, and that it has a boot priority BEFORE the hard disk.

Thanks brokenman.
I partitioned the flash drive and checked if I could see it again in the BIOS, this was the case.
After I installed porteus I'm still able to see it in the BIOS and to boot it. Partitioning the drive is the answer for the problem.
The error message Windows produces should be ignored, it doesn't seem to pose a problem.
