Porteus Kernel Builder

Here is a place for your projects which are not officially supported by the Porteus Team. For example: your own kernel patched with extra features; desktops not included in the standard ISO like Gnome; base modules that are different than the standard ISO, etc...

@neko, I tried this command and got nothing. I'm using Porteus 3.2.2 default kernel (i.e. 4.9.0). Is it right?

@fulalas
I guess that the reason of "got nothing" is
1. an absent of "/proc/config.gz"
or
2. the kernel running without CONFIG_IPC_NS config.

Maybe, the kernel config of Porteus 3.2.2 default kernel (i.e. 4.9.0) might not be set CONFIG_IPC_NS.

Porteus most recent kernel (000-kernel.xzm and vmlinuz),
which is gotten on the http://dl.porteus.org/x86_64/kernel/porteus-4.10.8/ ,
is not set CONFIG_IPC_NS in its config.

Thanks.

@Ed_P
If you download "Kernel Builder"

mkKernel-17.05.21-noarch-1.xzm (3 M)
http://www.mediafire.com/file/4bj3h3t2i ... arch-1.xzm
md5sum: bcd04f71c91ab652d387c27e25ea87d0 mkKernel-17.05.21-noarch-1.xzm

you can compare the config of your running kernel with one of "Kernel Builder".

Code: Select all

% su
# ls
mkKernel-17.05.21-noarch-1.xzm
# activate mkKernel-17.05.21-noarch-1.xzm
# modprobe configs
# zcat /proc/config.gz > yourConfig
# ls
mkKernel-17.05.21-noarch-1.xzm yourConfig
# diff yourConfig /usr/local/share/mkKernel/lib/v4.9/64bit.config
Thanks.

A good news!
AUFS has been updated.
Please refer to http://aufs.sourceforge.net/

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
1. "Porteus Kernel Builder" was updated to mkKernel-17.06.12-noarch-1.xzm
Please refer to viewtopic.php?f=75&t=6568&sid=b058ab913 ... 779#p52232

The script that makes the AUFS patch for v4.11 kernel line was updated.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
2. New "updated kernel Example" v4.11.4 was offered.
Please refer to viewtopic.php?f=75&t=6568&sid=b058ab913 ... 779#p52232

The kernel of Porteus ISO can be update to version v4.11.4 without compiling.

Note1:
The script "get.aufs4.11.0-untested.patch" that makes the AUFS patch for v4.11 kernel line
and
the patch "aufs.patch" that was gotten by "get.aufs4.11.0-untested.patch"
were included in v4.11.4.tar.xz.

Re: Porteus Kernel Builder

Post#112 by fulalas » 12 Jun 2017, 08:42

@neko, great news! :)

I've just built a 4.11.4 kernel with your program and it generated a folder called lib. It would be great if it generates a .xzm module in the end. What you think? It's easy to do that. Just need to call dir2xzm script ;)

Also, after creating the module from the built kernel 4.11.4 I noticed it has 18.3 mb, but Porteus 3.2.2 current kernel has 46.9 mb. Why that much difference? Another thing: Porteus 3.2.2 has a kernel module with a sub-folder sbin and a bin called cryptsetup.

@fulalas
1."It would be great if it generates a .xzm module in the end. What you think? "
This "Kernel builder" does not creat 000-kernel.xzm directly, but replaces "vmlinuz and 000-kernel.xzm" of "Porteus ISO".
"Porteus ISO" includes Porteus 3.2.2 32bit/64bit, Nemesis 32bit/64bit (and APorteus 32bit/64bit).

2. size difference
It might be depending on kernel version difference and config difference.
You can compare the config with one of Porteus 3.2.2 current kernel.
"v4.11.4.tar.xz" includes the 32bit/64bit config that was used by build kernel.

3."with a sub-folder sbin and a bin called cryptsetup"
Depending ISO placement, this tool sets these directory and entity in new "000-kernel.xzm" of ISO which is replaced.
Porteus 3.2.2 is followed as Slackware 32bit/64bit placement.
Nemesis (or APorteus) is followed as Archlinux placement.

Thanks.

@neko, I'm thinking about helping you. We need to do a couple of things to better automatize Porteus kernel update. Here's my TODO list. Let me know if you disagree or want to add anything.

0- Build the kernel; (already done by your program)
1- Create a 000-kernel.xzm module from the above build;
1.1- Copy this module to Porteus running unit folder /porteus/base;
2- Generate crippled_sources.xzm module from kernel sources;
2.1- Don't forget to include system.map -- currently your .tx modules aren't including this file, which is required to build VirtualBox;
3- Build a VirtualBox based on the built kernel;

By doing that we can match Porteus kernel full package (i.e. here).

@neko, after compiling kernel 4.11.4 with your program and creating a crippled_sources module with system.map, I got this error after trying to build a VirtualBox module with Vbox buider (already included in Porteus):

Code: Select all

WARNING: The vboxdrv kernel module is not loaded. Either there is no module
         available for the current kernel (4.11.4-porteus) or it failed to
         load. Please recompile the kernel module and install it by

Then, after calling sudo /sbin/vboxconfig I got this:

Although it says 'include/generated/autoconf.h or include/config/auto.conf are missing', both files exist. Does anyone know how to successfully build VirtualBox?

Re: Porteus Kernel Builder

@fulalas
1. your proposal
Thank you very much for your kind proposal.
If you will present your spec kernel build tool, it will be more happy for Porteus user and me.
If so, I will close this thread.

I had kept the thread, title "Update the kernel of Porteus v3.1".
(06 Jul 2015 --- 30 Dec 2016)
viewtopic.php?f=75&t=4788
Porteus version 3.2.2 was released.
And then it was closed.

A kernel builder tool is needed for APorteus.
I created it.
And it includes the function for Porteus 3.2.2 & Nemesis.
Therefor I opened it on this thread.

Now, if your spec's new kernel builder will be replaced with this one,
it will be more convenient for Porteus 3.2.2 user.

I do expecte that you will offer your spec's new kernel builder.

2. VirtualBox
I have not experienced in useing a VirtualBox.
I am sorry that I cannot help you about a VirtualBox.
A VirtualBox will be my next study.
I don't know it will make me happy or not.

Thanks.

@neko, I won't be able to write everything from scratch alone, so your program will still be useful. :)

What I'm thinking about is to extend your program, creating the following checkboxes besides the ones that already exist (i.e. download, expand & patch, own patch, etc):

1- automatically install new kernel module;
2- build crippled_sources module;
3- build VirtualBox module;

Explanation:
Step 1: get the kernel folder that your program is already building, and then creating a 000-kernel module from it, finally copying it to the right folder (where Porteus is currently running). Scripting that shouldn't be difficult, so we can basically check this step as done.
Step 2: I've managed to create the cripple_sources module with system.map. It's also easy to script that. The problem now is that probably my crippled_sources module is wrong somehow so we're failing the step 3.
Step 3: when step 2 is correctly done, I think we won't have much problem doing this step 3. One thing that I've noticed is that Vbox builder requires Python -- let's not forget that. I'll ask brokenman if there's anything else needed.

OK, I've managed to create a valid crippled_sources module (and it's also smaller :good:). VirtuaBox now is installing almost correctly. It seems that the Vbox builder creates a VirtualBox module with two problems for me:

1- you have to run VirtualBox as root, otherwise it won't startup (error: VirtualBox: Error -10 in SUPR3HardenedMain! VirtualBox: Effective UID is not root (euid=1000 egid=100 uid=1000 gid=100) VirtualBox: Tip! It may help to reinstall VirtualBox);
2- Porteus official VirtualBox module comes with /usr/lib64/xorg/modules/drivers/vboxvideo.so which allows you to run VMs with 3D accelerated graphics. However, building VirtualBox through Vbox builder I can't get this file;

Any help will be appreciated. :)

Here's the kernel 4.11.4 x64 module and its corresponding crippled_sources:
http://www.mediafire.com/file/96x7xxty5 ... 4.11.4.xzm
http://www.mediafire.com/file/q87ssmu69 ... 4.11.4.xzm

Can anyone try to build a VirtualBox module with them and check if it works -- also if it's possible to start a VM after enabling settings -> display -> enable 3D acceleration.

Fixed problem 1 from the second post above (need to sudo chown root:root /opt/VirtualBox/VirtualBox and sudo chmod 4511 /opt/VirtualBox/VirtualBox). So here's VirtualBox 5.1.23 x64 built for kernel 4.11.4 (at this moment with no /opt/VirtualBox/additions/VBoxGuestAdditions.iso). Unfortunately I still can't enable 3D acceleration, but everything else seems to be working just fine:

Next step: create the scripts to automatize the whole process and then giving it to neko so he can attach to his Kernel Builder program. We're almost there :good:
