Thank you for trouble report.
If you have a good idea to fix your reported trouble,
would you tell me?
I will try.

Thanks

If I were 'the kernel guy', I would be glad.
But I don't have enough skill.

I am only a operator to build kernel.
I don't understand linux kernel and the build mechanic.

Thanks.

No idea about fixing 4.2.6, moving on to 4.3.0 have not spotted any irregularities.

Being a bit of a perfectionist myself, your summary report nicely rounds off your contribution. IMHO Excellence :good:

change a set of firmware in kernel v4.3.0 for 000-kernel.xzm slim down.

Please refer to the top article of this thread.

Thanks.

Update of Earlier Report

4.3 also seems to have similar symptoms to 4.2.6. Now reverted to 4.2.5 last stable kernel used for 15 days without problem, before updating to 4.2.6.

Have an idea what could be causing this. Running KDE, kio_thumbnail jumped to 98.3% of cpu. Deleting and deleting made no difference. In the end ended up with 4 kio_thumbnail processes, with one of them taking up 98.3% of cpu. Went init 3 then init 4, but kio_thumbnail process remained. REISUB was only way out.

After reboot it was kio_file with kate, kde text editor. Again multiple kio_file processes. Killed parent process by id#, which turned out to be ksmserver. However, have met cpu problem with ksmserver before, when having unresolved dependency. Looks like an unknown symbol reference is caught somewhere along the line, ksmserver informed, after which, ksmserver causes the process at fault to go into tight cpu loop.

Even reboot from root terminal could not complete, had to resort to reisub. Will retry later 4.3 with new firmware, though I doubt it would fix the problem.

@Bogomips
I thank the valuable report of YOU.

The Archlinux's firmware packages were uploaded in order to pick up one needed.
And the 'tar' file includes "mod.his" and "fir.his".

Code: Select all

# make modules_install INSTALL_MOD_PATH=../ > ../mod.his 2>&1
# make firmware_install INSTALL_MOD_PATH=../ > ../fir.his 2>&1
I am glad if it will be useful for you.

I recently checked it. It's not because of your config, it's the same for all new kernels. Sorry for misinformation.
I compiled default 4.2.x kernel with small changes for Xen recently and fonts were smaller too.

Thank you for your follow-up.

By the way,
now I study on "SYSTEMD".
I am too slow to understand it.

Thanks.

Hello guys,

I'm a Porteus user, days ago I changed my laptop and now I have boot issue with my new HP Spectre x360 convertible.
I'm not able to boot even in text mode Porteus v3.1 x64.

Is there someone who may share an update kernel module in .xzm format? I think the boot issue is due to the old kernel of Porteus v3.1...
Thank you in advance,

Regards,

kalo86

Hi Kalo

See first post of this thread for directions. Update to:

Code: Select all

guest@porteus:~$ uname -a
Linux porteus 4.2.5-porteus #1 SMP PREEMPT Wed Oct 28 03:06:11 UTC 2015
This is the latest that has not given me any trouble so far.

Hi Bogomips,

I cannot run the tool to update the kernel module...
I only need one couple of file: xzm module for kernel and initrd.xz for the lib/module folder (related to the new kernel version).
I will read again the first topic, maybe there is a link to the newest file.
Regards,

kalo

Hi kalo

Here's the deal. I can offer advanced kernel 32bit. If you can get that running, you can then use kernel tool for 64bit advancement. Will then put up the xzm for 64 bit iso. Hopefully it will recognise a 64bit iso.

You need these files:

Code: Select all

guest@porteus:~$ tar cf upd4.2.5 vmlinuz initrd.xz 000-kernel.xzm
guest@porteus:~$ ls -lh upd4.2.5
-rw-r--r-- 1 guest guest 20M Dec 5 22:10 upd4.2.5
guest@porteus:~$ md5sum upd4.2.5
fff4b8f5328588b543b1201a6139cc17 upd4.2.5
guest@porteus:~$ tar tf upd4.2.5
vmlinuz
initrd.xz
000-kernel.xzm
Download upd4.2.5.

Let me know if successful.

I only need one couple of file: xzm module for kernel and initrd.xz for the lib/module folder (related to the new kernel version).
If you replace the kernel (vmlinuz) you should also replace 000-kernel.xzm since it contains all updated kernel modules/drivers.

Hi brokenman, you're correct.
Anyway I'm going to run Porteus Nemesis, I just tried to boot on my new HP laptop and it's working fine!
Thank you,

@Bogomips
I downloaded your 'tar' file "upd4.2.5" for kernel configuration research.
(The md5sum of 000-kernel.xzm, initrd.xz, and vmlinuz were same as upkernel-4.2.5-noarch-1.xzm.)

I would like to change a current version for better configuration.
If you have a good one, please open it for us. So much we will be happy.

Thanks.

@kalo86
Tool of Updating the Kernel of Nemesis v3.2 to the Kernel v4.3.0
(upnkernel-4.3.0-noarch-2.xzm)
is not fit to Nemesis v3.3.

v3.3 initrd.xz is differ with v3.2 one.

Some issues of v3.2 have been updated.

Therefore, please don't use the upnkernel for v3.3 Nemesis.

Thanks.

@neko

The bloke could not get into Porteus owing to his new h/w. The thinking was that a newer kernel was needed. So I offered the kernel from your kernel updater (get into Porteus with 32bit kernel, then use your updater to update 64bit iso), but he did not get back to me, and I now see he has decided to do Nemesis, so there is no need for me to bother with him any more.
