I did it and it don't works
porteus has RT2800STA driver and I need rt2800usb which is used by backtrack (and beini)
I think that rt2800usb needs to be supported by kernel and I don't know if porteus has it

RT2800STA and rt2800usb are in conflict.
I can add rt2800usb/rt2800pci to Porteus-1.0 but blacklisting will be required.
I hope that users will know how to do it.

I don't know how to do it, but in Beini you can run aircrack suite or connect to internet by WiFi without problems...
In Backtrack the aircrack suite works fine, but I can't connect to internet with my Alfa 2w (rt3070 chipset) so I think to do this is better to copy the way from Beini :D

The most common driver should be included by default. The least common should be a module that can be loaded, and blacklisting is necessary. I'm afraid this means the PCI wins out over the usb IMHO.

I agree, but how to do a module with rt2800usb driver and how to blacklist?

@goyfilms
i also could not connect to the internet with rt2800pci driver.
i will include rt2800usb and rt2800pci to 1.0 but they will be blacklisted by default (in favor of rt2860sta and rt2870sta). so if users wants to play with aircrack they will have to remove them from /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf.

Ok, but can you make it for v0.9 too? I would like to test it before 1.0 arrives :D

@goyfilms
here you go:
http://www.mediafire.com/file/xahp6ujx6 ... 9-i484.lzm
just blacklist 'rt28xxsta' drivers or 'rmmod' them and 'modprobe' 2800pci or 2800usb or whatever you want.
Let me know if they are working for you.

thanks.
I tell you:
I put the "rt2800xx-porteus-v09-i484.lzm" file in the modules folder and reboot the system
by default, porteus load "rt2870sta", then I put in a console: "rmmod -f rt2870sta" and the module is unloaded, but when I put "modprobe rt2800usb", this is the result "FATAL: Module rt2800usb not found."
what I'm doing wrong?

if you are saving changes then there is a chance that your /lib/modules/`uname -r`/modules.dep file is newer then rt2800usb driver and module database is not updated during startup.
You can force updating of modules database by issuing this command:
'depmod -a'
now you should be able to load desired driver.

thaks a lot!
with "depmod -a" works fine! even connecting to internet... but what can I do to load rt2800usb automatically on boot?

run these commands:
echo "blacklist rt2860sta" >> /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf
echo "blacklist rt2870sta" >> /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf
echo "modprobe rt2800usb >> /etc/rc.d/rc.local"

should be ok then

that can't work for me because I run Porteus from USB pendrive with grub4dos boot and I don't boot Porteus with persistent changes.
My menu.lst from grub4dos:

Code: Select all

title Porteus 0.9
find --set-root /ISOs/porteus/boot/vmlinuz
kernel /ISOs/porteus/boot/vmlinuz initrd=boot/initrd.lz ramdisk_size=6666 root=/dev/ram0 i8042.nopnp=1 rw autoexec=xconf;telinit~4 from_dev=/dev/sdb1 from_dir=/ISOs/porteus delay=2
initrd /ISOs/porteus/boot/initrd.lz
the content of /ISOs/porteus folder is:

Code: Select all

boot
porteus
exactly like the ISO file but uncompress, I mean not an ISO file but the files extracted to a /ISOs/porteus folder
