If the 1st partition size is selected MAX(USB size),
one partition will be created in USB.
Otherwise, 2 partitions will be created in USB.
The 2nd partition is used by only linux users.

The 1st partition file system is FAT/ext4.
The contents of ISO will be set in the 1st partition.

The 2nd partition file system is one of FAT, ext3, ext4.
The 2nd partition may be used for general purpose.
If the 2nd partition file system is a linux file system (ext4 ,ext3) ,
it can be used for a persistence directory.

It doesn't need to be opened, it's a Porteus module and needs to be Activated to be used. :)

I have just spent two whole days trying to install Porteus to a USB. It simply refuses to do it. From the dvd, it doesn't work, unetbootin can't do it either, following the instructions in the iso doesn't work because it doesn't allow you to put in the password, even though the instructions do provide it. I reformat the stick to FAT 32 each time, sometimes I flag it as boot, sometimes not. No matter what permutations I use, nothing works! a Windows user, encountering these problems, is just going to abandon Linux completely and tell everyone it's a dog, (which bionicpup is! Yeah I tried that as well, that does install eventually but you have to be sneaky) and potential users looking to change will encounter this and recommend that everyone avoids it. Frankly, I'm about to pass on it as well.

I truly don't undertand the problems you are having CestMero. But then again I don't know what pc you're using, whether it's x86 or x86_64, what OS you're using, what flash drive your using, what version of Porteus you're trying to install, where you got the CD/DVD since you neglected to tell us any of those specifics. :unknown: So trying to help is not possible.

Maybe this write up will help you: https://fitzcarraldoblog.wordpress.com/ ... ifference/

Hey, I know this is an old(ish) post and this is my first time here (although not my first time playing around with Porteus) I just wanted to say "Thank you" for that link. I'm looking at different ways right now, that I can install and use Porteus, both on USB devices and also hard drive partitions (maybe even some potential GRUB editing etc) so this blog post is most welcome.

Thanks again, and I'm amazed and happy that Porteus is still alive and well, and maturing also. I remember playing with version 3 (I think) and version 4 in the past, and although they were really good, version 5 is just so much better in every way. :)

Hello Zen, welcome to the forum.

Be sure to review the USB_INSTALLATION.txt file in the Porteus ISO file.

For USB installations I format the drive as FAT32, copy all the ISO files to the USB drive, then run the appropiate Porteus-installer. The FAT32 format supports booting the USB drive on both BIOS and UEFI systems. For saving changes I boot Porteus and use the Porteus SaveFile Manager to create a file for saving Porteus changes.

Im trying to run the install script that I copied to the USB flash drive, following the instructions of the USB_INSTALLATION.txt file of the Porteus5.01 image. The scripts asks to install to /dev/media , which does not exist. I assume that it should install to the porteus ext4 partition, which would be /dev/sda2 for me. The installer only asks to affirm or else is aborting. How can I set it to the correct path?
I am trying this on a Fedora Silverblue 38 system.

hi madari if you can mount the usb device into a directory in mount, cd in boot directory inside the key and run the linux installer, is better a fdisk -l to check the right device

thank you beny, but that is exactly what I did. I mounted the USB device and ran the installer script from inside it's boot directory.
its mounted at /run/media/fux/boot/boot in the /dev/sda1 partition (FAT32)
and the porteus folder is on the same device on its own ext4 partition on /dev/sda2
the install script wants to install to /dev/media, which does not exist.
