Useful for Install as a only one operating system on HDD to ext3 partiton

for 32-bit REMIX(but I could post also and for 64 bit)

extract extlinux.tar.gz to boot directory

1. Create on empty HDD ext3 primary and swap partions

see partition table semple at http://falcony.googlecode.com/files/cfdisk.jpg

2. Then write changes to disk format the partition file system for ext3 with commands mkfs.ext3 and initialize swap space using the command mkswap.

Note. You can do these operations manually using the graphical tool GParted, which is available at

3. After creating the file system, mount the formatted partition manuall restart the computer and load FIDOSlax from USB or CD.

4. Copy the two directories boot and slax to the hard disk partition/

5. Go to the partition on which you install in the directory boot /extlinux:

cd /mnt/sdXn/boot/extlinux

where, sdXn - the partition that you formatted

5. To activate the boot extlinux run this command:

./extinstall.sh

6. Restart the computer USB-flash drive or CD-ROM and load REMIX from your hard drive.

hd installation is not officially supported, but is nice to have this HOWTO for people who really want this.

But why do not we make it for Remix as users whould like to have Remix as only one operation system on HDD?

It install Grub4DOS and creates boot menu options on PC with Windows installed on HDD. Allow to use Remix on any filesystem, even NTFS.
Please kindly test it, check the code(bash script), improve it and use for Remix in a future(if decide rasonable)

As I browse the slax forums and see how many folks are posting questions relating to running slax on netbooks (and also seeing that they need an updated kernel and drivers for their hardware--and how poorly they are treated by some of the members there), I also wonder if we should support frugal installs, and perhaps include installation instructions in our standard install guide. The guide could just cover a quick and dirty copy and make bootable, with suggestions to browse the forums for info on making ext and swap partitions, if someone wants to use porteus as their every day netbook OS. Install instructions would be more complicated, though, if we need to keep windows installed side by side.

Thoughts? Concerns with official support for frugal?

yes - i was wrong above.
We do accept frugal installs on HD. Only full installations are not supported.

Porteus suppose to meant portability n flexibility and frugal IMO falls into flexibility umbrella, though haven't try HDD installation as yet i'm try to stay away from it remembering the angst i have to go through installing windoze and for the life of me i don't want to lug around my dinasour to claim it as being portable
