Dell XPS 13

Here you can post about your various experiences with PC hardware. You can also post about hardware that is not compatible with the linux kernel or not recommended for use with Porteus.

Sorry for my last post, there was an error. I have corrected for a second script providing maximum definition to 3200x1800.

@lukaluki:
The following post confirms evans proposition to work with the porteus 3.2 rc. You need 4.3 kernel or higher to run the XPS 13 graphics:
http://askubuntu.com/questions/698168/c ... 00-to-work
G'Day folks.. Luckily with the pickup in Linux/Ubuntu recently you can just use the new Intel Graphics installer located at the Intel website:
https://01.org/linuxgraphics/downloads/ ... inux-1.4.0
It fixed all my weird graphics issues on my new Dell XPS 13 (9350) so everything is now working :)
Black screen after grub boot screen (added i915.modeset=0 to grub conf to boot successfully - Removed after graphics driver update)
xrandr would error out on the output
Graphics glitches like lightdm semi-crashing the desktop
Couldn't add the second monitor tyo the existing x config (Even with dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg)
This does need a kernel 4.3 > so you may need to upgrade, I believe the website I posted has links to everything you need to install the driver so you should be good to go..
Movies are now smooth at full screen (I was dropping FPS like it was going out of fashion. (more displays than in the config then bombed out)
Good luck trend setters..

Download the following driver:
https://download.01.org/gfx/ubuntu/15.1 ... _amd64.deb

Use the deb2xzm command to transform deb to xzm module. Transfer the module to /porteus/modules folder and activate it.

As there will be missing dependencies, provide the output of the following command in terminal mode:

Code: Select all

intel-linux-graphics-installer
Prendre son temps, profiter de celui qui passe.

THanks Francois. Maybe another reason to move the base towards ubuntu. You can't beat it for compatibility.

I regret to have insisted so much for arch linux based distro. For sure a module wrapper for apt-get would be very interesting.

An interesting project for you Jay, lets say for next winter.

Thx, and sorry for my late reply on that.

The default resolution when starting in porteus is 3200x1800 which is the correct full resolution of the display. However when checking the Display and Monitor Settings, I can find other resolutions like 1920x1440, but not the correct Ratio which would be 1920x1080. Trying to set it with the xrandr command does not work => "cannot find mode 1920x1080". Is there a way to add it manualy ?

Can you please in more detail let me know how to get the GPU to work ? I will add a short & complete psinfo report of my xps13:

Let's try with xrandr:
A.

Code: Select all

root@porteus:~# xrandr --output eDP1 --mode 1920x1080 --output DP1 --off
B.

Code: Select all

root@slax:~# gtf 1920 1080 60 #Here the specific hz of your screen instead of 60 would be a better value
Then use the output of the above to force another screen display, that is the one you want:

Code: Select all

root@slax:~# xrandr --newmode "the output of gtf etc. within quotes"
For example:

Code: Select all

root@slax:~# gtf 1400 900 60
 # 1400x900 @ 60.00 Hz (GTF) hsync: 55.92 kHz; pclk: 104.23 MHz
 Modeline "1400x900_60.00" 104.23 1400 1480 1632 1864 900 901 904 932 -HSync +Vsync
 root@slax:~# xrandr --newmode "1400x900_60.00" 104.23 1400 1480 1632 1864 900 901 904 932 -HSync +Vsync
 root@slax:~# xrandr --addmode VGA "1400x900_60.00"
C. To come: the firmware. For this to work you will have to be on porteus testing rc4:
http://dl.porteus.org/x86_64/Porteus-v3.2rc4/

1. Setting the resolution with your commands was successfull, it works. How can I make this change apply on every start of my copy2ram ? I dont like to type this every time I start it.

2. The GPU Problem:
francois wrote:@lukaluki:
Download the following driver:
https://download.01.org/gfx/ubuntu/15.1 ... _amd64.deb

Use the deb2xzm command to transform deb to xzm module. Transfer the module to /porteus/modules folder and activate it.

As there will be missing dependencies, provide the output of the following command in terminal mode:

Code: Select all

intel-linux-graphics-installer
I did that and the output on the porteus 3.2rc4 64bit is:

Code: Select all

intel-linux-graphics-installer: error while loading shared libraries: libpackagekit-glib2.so.16: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
Btw the rc4 is really nice, I like the new KDE - but the "one-click opens a file functionality" is really annoying.

You are hard to follow.

Have a look here [STICKY] Newcomer, newbie, links, commands to porteus linux

Especially on how to ask questions on a linux forum. You do not provide enough information on what you did exactly.

When you say the command work:
What commands (I have provided two sets), what version of porteus, what desktop, are you on save changes mode (see cheat codes porteus with Google)?

Start a thread on how to make a script and auto start that script at boot up for the screen value

For the Intel installed see http://forum.porteus.org/viewtopic.php?f=61&t=6102

For the GPU, maybe someone else will help or your problems will be solved with porteus 3.2.

Sorry - as mentioned in first posts I always use boot2ram mode with user=root.
I used your B and A together. First I did B commands than i used A command for activation.

Code: Select all

gtf ...
xrandr --newmode ...
xrandr --output ...
I have read your thread regarding the GPU drivers... very sad :( but thank you very much for checking that out

For the script: put the xrandr command for your screen (A Solution) in a.sh file and make it executable. For kde desktop the autostart folder is in the /root/.kde4 folder.

So you do not use the changes cheatcode and you are on kde4 desktop porteus v 3.1.

1.0 Is there any reason why you do not want to use the changes cheatcode for persistence? In this case, I think that we could use both commands in sequence as a module in the /root/.kde4/Autostart/ folder.

2.0 If you do want to use the changes cheatcode for persistence, then the xrandr B commands would be registered and all you would need would be to have a script for the xrandr A commands, which could be as an executable file installed in the /root/.kde4/Autostart/ folder.

3.0 Do you understand how to make an executable script?

4.0 Did you try porteus 3.2 rc, what is the result?
