List of laptops

Post#1 by tobben » 24 Mar 2016, 17:17

I've make a little list of laptops that boot Porteus 3.1 (mostly 64-bit): http://opensourceecology.org/wiki/D3D_L ... ed_to_Boot

There's also a list of (one) laptop that didn't boot on first try: http://opensourceecology.org/wiki/D3D_L ... 3D_Porteus

Does anyone know about similar lists elsewhere on the Internet?

Also, you're very welcome to use/contribute to the list if you like it!

This is a great initiative!

Perhaps you can find a way to get people to add their systems to a list. If everyone from the forum could add their system to the list, it would be great.

Thanks! What buttons do you press to enter BIOS and/or UEFI config? Is changing boot order the only thing you do, or are there things like secure boot that needs disabling?

:) I'm not sure about the best way to create such a list. A dedicated Porteus wiki would cover the need, but would require both work and hosting. Is it possible to create sticky posts that anyone can edit? BBCode supports tables, although not sortable.

For now, I'll search around this forum and edit the list on opensourceecology.org/wiki manually. EDIT: Found 3 models that didn't boot, put them in http://opensourceecology.org/wiki/D3D_L ... 3D_Porteus

To get their models added, Porteus forum users can respond to this thread with

Laptop Model Name:
ISO version:
Comment (required BIOS/UEFI settings):
Links (for eventual further information):

I just like Slackware because I think it teach you about Linux to build packages where Ubuntu is like Windows you just install programs you want.

Toshiba sattelite z930, MSI-340-x, HP 1540ca, all three are laptops.

For your intimation, there is no reason that one desktop would work and another not. These Linux box have been working on porteus since ver. 2.0. A search with porteus and these laptop named will confirm.

Thanks! What buttons do you press to enter BIOS, and what BIOS settings did change?

I'll be using the list for RepRap workshops. The purpose of the list is to avoid one or two web searches per participant. A 2 min time saving per laptop would be super good for us :) For the same reason, we won't map sound cards and wifi cards. We'll only use keyboard, basic video, touchpad/mouse and USB ports.

Du you mean we can assume that all models mentioned in the old thread will boot Porteus 3.1 with working video, keyboard, touchpad and USB ports?

Toshiba will boot USB automatically without intervening in the bios. MSI to bios is F11. I will have to come back for the HP but I think it is the F10 key.

Everything works out of the box with 3.1.

For the hp, I confirm F10 for bios. and I add that this should be good for most hp boxes.

Good work. :D
