RE-implement pkgtool

New features which should be implemented in Porteus; suggestions are welcome. All questions or problems with testing releases (alpha, beta, or rc) should go in their relevant thread here, rather than the Bug Reports section.

RE-implement pkgtool

Post#1 by agreimann » 01 Jun 2011, 01:57

There is one thing that should not have been removed, imho, and that is pkgtool. I'm noticing that Porteus 1.0 will not "ship" with it, due to a new package manager being implemented. May I humbly suggest that Porteus includes the one for legacy, and the new package manager?

Then again, I'm not one of the team building Porteus, so this remains opinion, of which I will leave up to you guys. This is ONLY a suggestion I had.

It is still here in rc2 and will ship with v1.0. The Porteus Package Manager is totally independent of any other package tools/managers. In fact slackyd is also included in rc2 and final too.

Strange... bash could not pull up "pkgtool" on my machine. I can try again... maybe it was just another bug of something that didn't work right after wake. If it is there, I believe it, and I apologize for making such a post then! Should have fully verified the information first!

agreimann, were you perhaps running as a guest user, without superuser priveleges?

(if that's the case, fanthom gets the credit for this one, I'm just regurgitating)
Please take a look at our online documentation, here. Suggestions are welcome!

Yes , Ahau is right!

When , you're trying to run this tool from guest , the system will not found it with your current perm's.

That's why , you need to run this tool from root account (superuser).

Thanks Ahau!

I was running as root. It sounds like after waking from sleep on my computer the system cannot find certain things (e.g. pkgtool, systemsettings, etc.). On reboot, however, everything works wonderfully again. If anyone else has encountered bugs when their computer sleeps, it'd be good to test this out and see if they encounter the same result... :D

If it is an issue with stable version , please open a new thread in Bug Report of your architecture.

If is is an issue with development version , please report this bug in relevant thread.

@Hamza: At first, I was unaware this would be a bug. I actually thought that this was a package that got removed. Since it is there, I'm not worried about it anymore. And the sleep bug I think others are already discussing... so I won't post any sleep bugs unless I really have to. Thanks for your advice!

@agreimann
do you use 'changes=' cheatcode? if no then please try with 'changes=' and check if all is ok.
i have an idea what may cause the troubles but need confirmation before sharing :)

Yes, I used the changes cheatcode. :)

Posted after 22 hours 30 minutes 36 seconds:
Guys, something ain't right.

Are you sure we still have pkgtool?

bash-4.1$ pkgtool
bash: pkgtool: command not found
bash-4.1$ _

This would indicate to me that pkgtool is not available. Did it get removed? This time I did verify that it cannot be found. Strangely, it does work in the 09 version, though....

@agreimann
tested sleep/hibernate with and without "changes=" on two PC's yesterday: Dell Inspiron 9300 and my own PC.
Everything worked well: no missing programs, even net got restored after awake.

On my notebook: sleep does not work at all probably due to Intel GPU (both PC's i have tested had ATI cards: X300 and HD2600XT) or fancy rt2860 wifi card.
Linux still is short of decent sleep/hibernate support so i would try to avoid these.

Also: please try Porteus on other PC (ideally with ATI GPU) and check sleep mode there. if it works then it would be your particular HW fault and not Porteus installation, etc...
Please add [Solved] to your thread title if the solution was found.

Finally glad to be back. Had a lot of stuff to do. :)

From what I'm seeing, as I mentioned in the chat... it looks like my particular model. No other computer is experiencing these problems. And everything on mine works fine after sleep. It is weird how this computer also doesn't like 32-bit X11 on 64-bit... Ahau is right, and I agree in that no other computer has kicked back this type of behavior.

Rest assured, all the hardware in it works fine--I've tested it; also been working with computers (software and hardware) for years now. Thanks for taking the time to look into this issue--I do not think it is a Porteus problem--it's my machine. :) At least you don't have to worry about re-compilation. :)

What model is the difficult netbook? This is a strange behaviour indeed.

My favorite comp brands (I definitely like whiteboxes too--built a Mac-PC mix once :D), are HP and Apple, just to let people know--Apple's my all-time favorite. :)

Anyway, this computer is a HP G72-b49wm model. It's the first I've seen to have these issues. It's weird that way...
