To your machines, get set: comparative studies of porteus

New features which should be implemented in Porteus; suggestions are welcome. All questions or problems with testing releases (alpha, beta, or rc) should go in their relevant thread here, rather than the Bug Reports section.

To your machines, get set: comparative studies of porteus

Post#1 by francois » 08 May 2011, 00:20

To your machines, get set: comparative studies of the basic operating system porteus v. rc1.0 vs ...

windows and some of the top ten distrowatch linux os:
http://distrowatch.com/dwres.php?resource=major

some of the lightweight distributions:
Lightweight Linux distribution

The idea here is to compare porteus to other os in terms of booting and closing time for know (listing the basic software provided by these os would be interesting). This information would be used on wikipedia to present the system. We want to establish our reputation: simple, fast and effective. Lets prove the fast feature.

The comparison could be made in terms of the kde desktop or in terms of the lxde desktop depending on the type os: main distribution or lightweight.

Testing on recent boxes could be a good thing, but also on some machines that are not so recent. Mentioning the specs of these machines would be necessary.

1) I would like that we agree on two or three main systems to be compared with porteus and a few lightweights.
2) that we have a set of recent and older machines on which to test porteus for which we could provide specs like ram, processor, wifi and graphic card for example. What should we ask as for specs?
3) agree for the median of three runs of booting and closing on each system.

But first, what do you think of the idea^

I love it. A video showing porteus up and running in 10 seconds is one thing ... but some people like stats and comparisons. After all fanthom could have used some magical trickery for the video!

After we are done with the comparison of say ... ZEN ... we can then explain that they too can boot in record times by using porteus as the base, and having a ZEN userland! Hmmm borg like.

@brokenman
"After all fanthom could have used some magical trickery for the video!"
ekhm...
no magic - just cheatcodes (and little tweaking of rc scripts) :)

good idea, i hope that one of them will be slax 7

booting time is not enough to make a comparison, OSes should be compared in every possible aspect.

The main question is: who will do the comparison?
(i'm directly involved in Porteus development so my opinin can't really be objective)
Please add [Solved] to your thread title if the solution was found.

Which would be the most important aspects? The study has to be simple if we want volunteers. And which OS?

IMHO

1. How fast it can boot and get online
I believe google will soon release a netbook with a FAST boot time that simply connects to the net. They believe everything is moving towards cloud computing, and people just want to connect quickly.

2. Ease of installation
I have given up on the odd distro that was just too much work to install and get everything running.

3. Ease of use when it comes to installing new applications
A package manager is a must for this.

4. Good technical support if needed.
Ubuntu/Fedora will be hard to beat.

5. Ability to cover all areas of computing
This will be tough for gaming and graphic design but it's nice to at least be able to open windows documents in an office application.
