I say: Kill the command-line!
Brokenman presses intercomm button on desk and says in deep voice ... "Kill him"

The day that happens is the day development grinds to a screeching halt. Apart from that i say we need more GUI !!!

It limits the ability to use the computer.
I disagree. With the CLI you can use simple scripting to automatize some stuff you need to have done over and over again. The CLI is not a backwards move from any X window that is running. It is an addition, and at times a very clever one, since PCs are meant to be able to work by themselves when we tell them so, and in my book that is easier done with any CLI scripts than using any approach of scripting with a graphical environment...

I think he is being sarcastic. Actually the CLI in linux is the major reason I switch from windows to linux. Back when it was computer technician. I needed a little more function than what was made available by the command.com. Multi-tasking, better network tools, better shell tools. The ability to [alt+f1] [alt+f2] just blew me away back in 98-99. Anyways I don't think it is any bit resonable, to rid the operating system of its CLI.

How about that?:

When you can use your computer "one hand free" then the OS is well done. 8)

Especially if that OS doesn't leave any traces on your existing system, and can be used to circumvent permissions, etc., within windows.

Oh, did I just say that?

Well, here's what I mean -- on my company-provided laptop, I can't install programs, install a printer, view certain websites, format a flash drive, etc., etc. But, I can plug in a flash drive with Porteus, and do whatever I want. I can't get into the data on my hard drive (it's encrypted), but I can use the hardware for whatever nefarious deeds I wish.

I don't mean to insult you by that comment. I have always felt. What is my computational task? Can I do it in linux? And 99.9999 % of the time I can. Don't put up walls with your opinions because they prevent you from learning. Just keep an open eye, open mind, and open source. There is no end to what you can accomplish.

issa, I think this is a good point. I thought 99.999% of my computer-tasks I actually could shift to linux - and well I can't...

IMHO, Porteus can get to the top only if
-we develop in the right direction,
-we must smell what is coming on an do it first (example: iPhone, mini-laptops, usb-stick, etc, etc,).

If we loose the enthusiasm, Porteus will die!
-when I first discovered Slax, ist active community had over 500 members......
-if you login now, it has gone down to under 300.....

I can smell a down-trimmed version of kde4 -32bits- could be a best seller.
If we keep ourselves in the bleeding edge of development, we could organize and sell, worldwide, thousands of usb-sticks already loaded with the last versions of Porteus for the cost of the sticks plus the cost of loading the OS plus the cost of distributing them, with brief instructions in the package.

I made a survey among my students; they have now Porteus and are glad to get away -until now- from viruses and worms without having to pay a toll for anti-virus services. Youg people decides the new trends and if we get in sync with them, the success is ours!

Good night!

Aaahh. Surfin those porn sites are you?

And having walls means you have to have windows!!

Perfectly true ... but youth is wasted on the young.

I think the true way to exploiting the youth is to develop a version for ARM proc and to put on mobile devices. The youth of tomorrow will look back at notebooks and say ... "You used to carry that cumbersome thing around?"

I hope to see more diverse mobile OSs take off...
http://www.idroidproject.org/wiki/OpeniBoot

I'm using a jailbroken iPad right now, and I am excited to see what the future holds... I am in love with the idea that something like Slax and Porteus exists, and that it is so aesthetically pleasing, functional, and minimal. I can only imagine it will get better, as long as it maintains it's 'hook'. So far, for me, working on thin clients, with limited space and memory, the hook is it's GUI interface and ability to run within a limited environment. I would suspect mobile devices will be the new thin clients of the future...with all the advancements of virtualization, wireless data transmissions methods/speed, and cloud computing...Porteus feels like it's in line for the next advancement of general micro computing.

I hope to see NetBooting where people use the net to cache their environment and use massive repositories to obtain driver hardware/software support.
