Hi,

Thank you for releasing 3.0 final. :good:

I have tried Always Fresh mode and install abiword but I encountered error as below:-

Code: Select all

guest@porteus:~$ abiword

I confirm the problem with the abiword package.

However, note that usm will provide you with a functional package free of missing dependencies. :)

"Xorg failed to start up - removing proprietary driver(s)"

After this message the monitor shuts off, so I had to reboot.

@jimwg,

Sorry just reread and saw your post. You can remove USM from a root terminal like so:

Code: Select all

rm -f /usr/bin/usm
rm -f /usr/bin/usmgui
rm -f /usr/bin/packagetools
rm -f /usr/share/applications/usm.desktop
rm -f /usr/share/icons/hicolor/48x48/apps/usm*
rm -rf /usr/share/usm
rm -rf /etc/usm
rm -f /usr/man/man8
Then download the latest slackware package from sourceforge and install it with: installpkg /path/to/usm-3.1.0-noarch-1.txz

@Francois
If you miss any functionality from slackyd please let me know and I will endeavour to add it.

best what you can do is to update whole box to 3.0 final without mixing components (that can bring only troubles).
But I did this switch TO view the desktop. On my system the native XFCE that came with 3.0 final won't display additional hard or flash drives on desktop, also won't adhere to desktop panel image settings.
fanthom wrote:We need to review the way Porteus deals with having to create a savefile.
i think i have heard all argumentation already but why not :)
Why not create a default save for the first timer? Also, when you ask the system to do a savefile why can't it tally up how large the request package is going to be then just save it? If there's an inconsistent file medium in the way, flag the user that such exists and alternate save styles (whatever) would be duly implemented?
dustbunnies wrote: needed smplayer because I don't know how t get my internet browser (firefox and opera) to play youtube

You can view youtube videos in firefox without installing flash by appending &html=1 to the end of any video page url

This add-on (when installed and enabled) will automagically append that for you:
I hope there's an easy (auto?) patch for this technique because it's "too geeky" to ask newbies and OS tasters to implement (kind of like a new car salesman saying to overlook the ding), trust me, especially since gnome mplayer also doesn't work straight on the 3.0 final desktop on my system either.

I'm using the 3.0 final Xfce right now.
There is no problem viewing the desktop.....flash drive mounts automatically and Thunar opens to display the contents.
Gnome Mplayer opens fine and plays, mp4's anyway. Panel settings are staying as I set them.

The only thing I've seen so far is Audacious with a black display and no way in preferences to change it.

I think your problem lays elsewhere...possibly a corrupted download or something.

Using Porteus Razor v3.0 final in always fresh on an Eee PC
Suspend isn't working on closing the lid and Xorg.0.log shows this:

[ 14.868] (II) config/udev: Adding input device Lid Switch (/dev/input/event0)
[ 14.868] (II) No input driver specified, ignoring this device.
[ 14.869] (II) This device may have been added with another device file.

Suspend works fine with Mate and Lxde.
Also, finding that Porteus System Info is hanging badly and eventually locks up.

EDIT: The Xorg log may be of no help as it tells me the same about the headphone jack, yet it works fine.

@donald
google reveals that it's a know issue and patches are provided already:
http://blog.langfinger.org/?p=314
hopefully i'll be able to use them for 173.x line. i'm really busy now so please give a day or two to update drivers on the server.

roadie answered that everything is ok - i'm sure there is something wrong with your setup (probably mixed kernels). please back up then remove ALL porteus installations you have and use only one fresh XFCE-3.0 (or you could find out how to use 'from=' cheatcode which is necessary in case of multiple installations)

Why not create a default save for the first timer?
could someone start a fresh thread in 'Development' for this? i guess there will be hot discussion around this topic :)

probably it has to be configured to do this

finding that Porteus System Info is hanging badly and eventually locks up.
please tell me exac steps to recreate this (how you launch it, which tab do you select, etc..)

yep, with "nVidia-173.14.39-porteus-v3.0-i486-2ftm.xzm" the system is booting
flawlessly into the Gui.
(lsmod shows nvidia and the nvidia Xsettings gui shows the values)
I can't test 64bit. no such hardware.
Good Work....thanks

It seemed to lag at opening it. It was slow to change from the main window to other sections such as logs. No one thing seemed to cause the slowdown.
I haven't booted into it again, will when possible.

I installed Porteus Mate v3.0 final to two laptops for dual boot and found a potential glitch using the Porteus-installer-for Linux.com file. On a Toshiba NB300, the install went fine, booting was flawless.

With an Acer Aspire One D250, the installer pointed Syslinux to the recovery partition for Windows, rather than the XP partition. When that partition is booted, it starts the eRecovery program which restores the boot and wipes out the Porteus bootloader. You have 3 choices when it boots, total wipe of partitions, partial wipe, or exit......exiting still kills the bootloader.

The fix was to edit the porteus.cfg file to point to hd0 2..(the installer pointed to hd0 1) then Windows and Porteus will boot with no problems.

Using 32bit Porteus Razor 3.0 final right now, booting always fresh from the iso.
I opened Porteus System Info....it opens fast, lags slightly when I move from the Machine tab to another. Staying in Machine tab and moving from kernel to any other on that tab shows a 2 second lag....it then gets worse the longer it's open, freezing after about 4 minutes.

After force ending the process and restarting, it does the same, CPU goes up to 80%...it freezes even if nothing has been viewed, just open and let it sit and the CPU usage goes up. It takes about1 minute to shut down with a force quit.

If opened and a report generated, it's fine, does the report and CPU returns to normal.

I noticed the change in the layout of the 32bit Mate iso in that there is only a /boot and /porteus/base directory....no rootcopy, modules, optional. I thought it might be specific to Mate, but see now that all versions are the same.

Will that be a problem for new users who will have no modules folder?
Is this a new format?

EDIT:...ignore the above, it seems the way I was mounting the iso changes the view.

Thanks for the info regarding the installer. This is important.
I can't reproduce the hang in the information screen but can you please upload the dump? It might help to narrow down what is causing the hang. My main interest is in any info that is missing or garbled.

I'm glad I had dinner before re-reading this thread and seeing your edit. My heart skipped a beat.
