Porteus changing distro

New features which should be implemented in Porteus; suggestions are welcome. All questions or problems with testing releases (alpha, beta, or rc) should go in their relevant thread here, rather than the Bug Reports section.

arch is a great distro with a fantastic documentantion, sadly it switched to systemd so I think it is not a good idea to base porteus on arch, it would be better to stay close to slackware.

The problem of lack of package (if that being a problem) is to develop tools to use debian or ubuntu repositories in a similar way of usm does with several repos and also to encourage users to maintaing a personal repo of porteus modules, IMHO

I was checking out Alien Bob's page and in this page
http://taper.alienbase.nl/cgit/liveslak ... README.txt
==== Other Slackware based Live distros ====

Naturally, there have been many who went before me, and since I started as a n00b in Linux Live land, I have learnt a lot about how a Live distro works from playing with these other Slackware-based Live distros. Allow me to name them, and show respect:
Slax, and others are there including Porteus :)

Porteus was created as a fork of SLAX by the SLAX community when the development of SLAX seemed to have ended. Porteus has an active user community where it's "all about the modules". The use of aufs instead of overlayfs allows Porteus (like SLAX) to add and remove squashfs modules in the running Live system on the fly, which sparked the development of a lot of community modules. It looks like the next generation of Porteus will be based on Arch Linux instead of Slackware: this has to do with the original Porteus developer leaving the team.
I truly do not know if the next generation of Porteus will be based on Arch or not, but it is great that AlienBob created the Slackware Livecd/dvd in the case that the next one will be based on Arch. This way we are assured of running Slackware on the go like we did with Slax and with Porteus.

I'm glad he did too. Creating a porteus that uses overlayfs and slackware packages is super simple. You can't use modules (on the fly) with it so it would be like a super lightweight slackware live ... but I see no point since Alien Bob has got the goods.

Anyway, we are set for another slackware based Porteus at least for slackware-14.2

Fanthom is the other developer. He runs porteus kiosk on this same forum.
