Feedback for Porteus version 2.0 RC2

New features which should be implemented in Porteus; suggestions are welcome. All questions or problems with testing releases (alpha, beta, or rc) should go in their relevant thread here, rather than the Bug Reports section.

cant recreate here... please try in 'Always Fresh' mode.
Tried always fresh from usb and cd, same thing happens,, checked iso md5sum -- is corrrect ,, reburnt cd -- no change ,, copied music file to desktop instead of playing from HD...nope..
tried two different machines : athlon deskstop with nvidia graphics and corei7 laptop with ati graphics.... both have asus motherboards..
no problems with gnome-mplayer, smplayer, or dolphin.....

..and the 'Porteus-installer-for-Linux.com' doesn't seem to want to work for me....in arch or porteus...as root.... ? (when i was trying to fix my nonbooting usb)

I would like to report a problem with Truecrypt,
i have addressed this issue on mchat - please check the archive and report if provided workaround works for you.
I replied to mchat but apparently you were already offline. The work around you provided using ktsuss truecrypt works and it allows me to mount the encrypted device but a second problem arises and the decrypted device already mounted in /media is not accessible, I don't know why that happens.

Let's see if anyone can help me out with this (XFCE-64bit):

When I am listening to online radio or music after a few minutes (around 10min) the computer goes to sleep and everything stops. The problem is that the OS thinks there is nothing going on when I am listening to music in sites like Rdio.com, maybe I could adjust the power settings to never go to sleep once I find it, but ideally the OS should know that the browser is open and streaming music even if I don't touch the keyboard.

The display device on one system I've worked on has the same impatience. :wall: In this case, perhaps a screensaver issue?

I now think that the display problem is related to XFCE and not Porteus, I just changed the settings in Settings>Power Manager to get around this.

@ncmprhnsbl
what type of file are you trying to play in qmmp?
can anyone confirm qmmp crash?
it's really working here without any problems.....
and the 'Porteus-installer-for-Linux.com' doesn't seem to want to work for me
please try to copy files on usb manually then launch installer as root with 'sh Porteus-installer-for-Linux.com' command. does it return any error code?
please post console output you get.
also - what's your usb partition layout and filesystem you are installing to?

@godzilla
The work around you provided using ktsuss truecrypt works and it allows me to mount the encrypted device but a second problem arises and the decrypted device already mounted in /media is not accessible
ok - i have written later that you could try to open file manager as 'super user' and access the data from it.
since you have mounted encrypted data as user1 (root in this case - through ktsuss) then you should not be able to access it from any other account.
let me know if that resolves this problem. it's still not a perfect solution but i have no clue how to configure sudo.

@Ahau
as per above posts (and previous problems) i would suggest to disable sleep/hibernation in XFCE by default and just turn screensaver on.
in KDE4 i have 'sleep' set but only when battery is reaching critical level. in other cases it's disabled.
Please add [Solved] to your thread title if the solution was found.

Thanks, fanthom. I agree, I'll disable sleep/hibernate from the default settings in xfce4-power-manager. I don't have any screensaver program in Xfce, so I will have it blank the screen (without sleep,hibernate or locking) after a while.
Please take a look at our online documentation, here. Suggestions are welcome!

never had a problem before(in 1.2 or 2.0rc1) ...odd.. i tend to think it might be a corrupt iso download..but the md5sum checked out and nothing else seems affected...

Bugs:
* JDownloader will not start; well, it will start, but the splash screen never appears. Something seems to halt forever. No, I mean: The cursor will change to "JDownloader" symbol, stay in changed mode for 5 seconds and then it will disappear and normal cursor will appear. The program splash screen and start will never appear. (?)
* nmap and TCPDUMP are complaining about a missing library called "libpcap.so.1"
* PAN (the newsreader) is complaining about a missing library called "libenchant.so.1"
* Filezilla is missing "libwx_gtk2u-aui-2.8"
* kvpnc is missing "libkio.so.4"
* kvirc: error while loading shared libraries: libQtXmlPatterns.so.4: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

NO BUGS: Good working modules so far are: nc, newspost, rar/unrar, stunnel, sabnzbd, xchat, nasm, teamviewer, opera.

Any advice of how to get the "misbehaved" old modules to run are welcome! (or where to get better versions, preferably ready as XZM module file!)

@ncmprhnsbl
a) i can confirm qmmp bug now (not sure why everything was ok on my laptop) - will investigate this.

b) permission denied for root on ext4 partition - weird.
please mount the stick manually (as root) in /mnt/usb, enter to /mnt/usb/boot and run installer.
must work or you have corrupted ISO image/filesystem.

@att

Code: Select all

-rwxrwxrwx 1 root root 39148 Jun 6 2008 /usr/lib/libenchant.so.1.4.2
this lib was compiled 4 years ago. please dont expect that it will work.
only one cure: delete your whole repo and start from a scratch. there is nearly 650 modules in 64bit official repo and 2k of slackware packages in PPM so i'm sure you will find nearly everything.

please use PPM as it pulls every dep - even perl and python ones.
Please add [Solved] to your thread title if the solution was found.

b)might need to hold my hand... :oops: ..need exact command for mounting manually.... usbs want to mount in /media..
name of usb partition is: sdc1 or port2rc2 ..and should i NOT be running in ram?

@fanthom
update --- "please run 'mkdir /mnt/usb && mount /dev/sdc1 /mnt/usb && cd /mnt/usb/boot && sh Porteus-*.com'" worked perfectly.(in porteus in ram) thankyou.... made a note for future use..
might i suggest that the document include these details for us stoopeedos ;) ...tho i realise thats what the graphical installer is for...
arch for instance doesnt mount anything in /mnt , but in /run/media/~/..

Have the KDE 64-bit RC2. Unless I am mistaken, this does not include usb_modeswitch. I think this means it will not be able to use 3g modems. This was mentioned in connection with RC1 and I believe it was said that usb_modeswitch would appear in RC2. Any particular reason why this hasn't happened?

Continue to have problems with usb attached devices on the Tosh S300 Satellite Pro laptop. These don't seem to occur with Parted Magic for example on the same machine. Nor for that matter does it happen with Porteus 1.1 64-bit which I have been using to burn CDs lately as it still has K3b.

@ ncmprhnsbl
a) must be a bug in latest qmmp (or incompatibility with slackwares dbus) as i have resolved this issue by downgrading to 0.6.5 version (used in rc1) - will stick to that for final.
b) please run 'mkdir /mnt/usb && mount /dev/sdc1 /mnt/usb && cd /mnt/usb/boot && sh Porteus-*.com'

@gnomic
a) i have included 'iso-codes' in rc2 and got a wizard which guided me through mobile broadband settings (this wizard was not available before) so i thought that's enough. will include usb_modeswitch for final. thanks.
b) which kernel version is used in Parted Magic?

This is just an idea, because of all the problems with Kvpnc perhaps due that it was designed to run on KDE, I was thinking that maybe it is best to replace Kvpnc with a command line only OpenVPN tool, it is fairly easy to use OpenVPN from command line in shell, you just type openvpn "certificate name" and that is it, the tunnel is created.

@fanthom

About the problem with Truecrypt, I will test if it works soon and report back, I only wanted to mention a Linux distribution called Ubuntu Privacy Remix that comes with Truecrypt and is able to mount everything working out of the box, I am naming it in case looking at their code can be of any help.
