Try a gnome desktp today

New features which should be implemented in Porteus; suggestions are welcome. All questions or problems with testing releases (alpha, beta, or rc) should go in their relevant thread here, rather than the Bug Reports section.

Try a gnome desktp today

Post#1 by brokenman » 27 Dec 2012, 22:57

For the latest Porteus v2.0rc1 i have made an extra module so you can try out a gnome2 desktop environment in Porteus. This is a highly stripped version and removes MUCH of the total functionality but should be enough to give you an idea and see if you like it.

If there is a following i will make a FAT GNOME environment (400Mb) with all working parts including libreoffice, vlc, google chrome, etc.

INSTRUCTIONS:
Porteus v2.0 32bit. Download the module here and REPLACE 004-razor with it. Reboot.

Porteus v2.0 64bit Download the module here and add it to the porteus/base (or modules) folder. You will need to use the cheat 'mate' during boot to arrive at the gnome desktop.

Enjoy and post feedback. You may get an authentication error with 64bit version after booting. Just close it for now in this taster release.

This is great. Except for the following message at bootup: I thought, I had copy paste that guy, but it seems I did not do it. I'll reboot and come back. :)

The message is probably the authentication popup? It is because another polkit has taken the stage in place of mate-polkit. Shouldn't be too hard to fix that. I mainly want to see if people are going to like this environment. Hopefully it works with your dual screens!

Its:
DBus.Error:org.freedesktop.PolicyKit1.Error.Failed: An authentication agent already exists for the given subject

Hi
i just tried the 64 bit module , great it worked perfectly , it's light and fast, great work .
there is only 2 things,
1- the volume control worked fine but when opening the mixer error message: can't find mate-volume-control , please add it in the next module.

2- i can't mount my partations from my computer , i must navigate to ( mnt => hdax ) to open
mounted partations .

every thing else worked fine .

Note:
in the big module don't forget Gimp 2.8 & inkscape , try to keep it small :)
you can keep a light one beside the fat one :friends:
Thanks

It works perfectly on the dual screen.
Thanks. :D

Just tell us when additional improvement will be on. I will be happy for further testing.

Any novelty with this gnome desktop? I am eager to try them out. 8)

If you don't do it for me, do it for markds. A favorable impression to that guy would be a winning one ( I am putting pressure here, ain't I?)

Anticipated welcome to you on this thread markds. :)

Whoa, you are giving me more credit than I deserve. I'm just a simple user, very thankful to all of you who spend the time and effort to do all this amazing work.

I see this mate desktop is pretty similar to Dropline? I like it and I'd really like to test that FAT gnome module/porteus. Personally I think it was a mistake taking gnome out especially with KDE4 being the way it is.

On laptops the gnome desktop looks great. :D

1) I cannot access to the wallpapers that I have added in the /usr/share/wallpaper folder with:
right click on desktop > change desktop background

Did I choose the wrong folder? :(

2) Once I have moved the Menu-Application-Places-System panel item, firefox, leafpad and lxterminal could not be moved to the right at the place they were before.

3) The panel as a whole could not, alas be moved to a second display.

4) It is not possible to:
left click of mouse > Run in terminal script files (with the execute permission)

Just try that with a bash file with the command:

Code: Select all

setxkbmap ca
Or any other script file. Is this the intended behavior.

However, it will work with:
left click of mouse > Run

Cheers. 8)

Posted this on the Fat Gnome topic, but for Fat Gnome, the editing of the menu link doesn't work. Nothing happens.
