Porteus-4.0 is in the pipeline.

New features which should be implemented in Porteus; suggestions are welcome. All questions or problems with testing releases (alpha, beta, or rc) should go in their relevant thread here, rather than the Bug Reports section.

Porteus-4.0 is in the pipeline.

Post#1 by brokenman » 12 Oct 2017, 17:14

The Porteus team is busy preparing the latest version of Porteus which will be based on slackware-current allowing people to stay on the bleeding edge. We are in the process of addressing bugs and creating desktops. A big thank you to our DEV team!!

This newer version will be slightly larger than previous versions but should be more compatible with a wider range of machines. I've been using it for the last 6 months as my everyday operating system and it serves me well.

What can we expect?

A silent,quiet boot up, with exploding words "Fast and Furious"; "This is Porteus for You" in a deep Blue background and a " See You" message during shutdown;

Logs for Porteus error messages during boot and shutdown process;

A separate base module for all applications;

An animated watchman applet for Internet activity...Red for no activity and Green for activity and log for outgoing calls to firewall;

A guide with useful commands for "Terminal" say, a collection of all suggestions in this forum for trouble shooting and basic system operation from 'command prompt';

A collection of 30 Full HD wallpapers with a script to boot with a random one everyday or every boot;

Adding a "Games" listing in the application menu with few games assembled by members here;

more, if I could dream!

I have seen Xorg finishing its job by 10.52 seconds in my Laptop, and I can't be greedy on speed; Bench marking gurus, report sizable jump in performance with new release of Kernel. Is it true 'Porteus Development team?

Cheers!

As an (ex-) contributor to Parted Magic I have been on the lookout for quite some time now for a Slack64-Current based live CD to base my unofficial spin on - and to upstream my findings of course.
I sure hope the 4 build procedure is not as monolitic as the 3 one was. Is it possible to have a preview somehow?
As an aside: The initial post mentions "our Dev team", but I have not been able to find its members being listed somewhere.

I'm not sure what you mean by monolithic but the new one is not much different. Just updated. Perhaps not what your looking for. I will send a PM with a link to the build scripts.

Received the PM and had a preliminary look at the ISOs and scripts: thanks!
I think a 1475-line script to build the 10 basemods is monolithic. But please understand this is only a first impression and *not* a negative comment.
I will dive deeper into things and will report back in due time.

Kamal, why are you posting in this thread as opposed to creating a new thread about your problem? :%)

I'm not that knowledgeable about this kind of stuff but will it ship with Xdmx?
Looking at this https://mirrors.slackware.com/slackware ... org-server it has dmx enabled but i'm not even sure porteus uses this switch.
I downloaded the 4.0 version to check this but i could not find it.

Either way it works really well already!

-edit
I just found out that Xdmx is now xdmcp, so gues it works already out of the box.

I had two problems with 20171023 core updates. (where are the ISOs?) with 003 lxde - I only see 001 and 002 updates
1) X config. failed completely (black screen) on a new Radeon laptop ... worked on existing UEFI and legacy BIOS desktops ... BUT ...
"always fresh" worked on the new laptop ... so I only report this as you may want to emphasize a note that users should always try "always fresh" if they have problems with the new release(I do not yet know the incompatibility, but the comment probability stands whatever the incompatibility)
2) on all machines, on all BOOT choices (even with "always fresh") the delete key works as a destructive backspace (as does backspace) on a command line such as lxterminal+bash
I only have UK keyboards to test with ... kmap presence or absence is reflected by £/# changing but does not resolve the delete/backspace issue - this I class as an annoyance, I will still migrate to gain the glibc 26 upgrade - thanks :thumbsup:

Porteus 4.0 preview only for now. When it will come out from the pipeline or public all the bugs will be addressed. :happy62:

if Porteus 3.2.2 was great with the upcoming Porteus will be awesome!
I want to do a few observation when I tested "porteus-4.0-x86_64-20171203.iso" I noticed that I can't see my networks wifi .. I only added this module 003-xfce4.xzm to have access to nm-applet from this testing ISO that is working good http://ftp.vim.org/ftp/os/Linux/distr/p ... teus-v4.0/ maybe it is my mistake use a module in this way but i dont know how to connect from console to be sure about this.
I got this from system information: WIRELESS INFO: 03:00.0 Network controller: Qualcomm Atheros QCA6164 802.11ac Wireless Network Adapter (rev 20).. This mean that my wifi is load?

I'm editing this post, I have forgotten there is a tool to setup my network 'pns-tool' and this tool only show me eth0.

PD. Thanks to the Dev team to keep this project Lactose free and free systemD allergies :worship:
