You're welcome franćois. Seems still a popular DE, based on the download stats already.

I was using XFCE in both 32 and 64 bit versions. In 64 bit , I used to get at least two pages of error messages, like " parsing errors" and many other listings during "shut down". I ignored them since the machine shuts down eventually.

When I tried with jssouza's "LXDE", the machine shut down quietly with only 'unmounting" messages, in 1 or 2 seconds.

XFCE, you have a problem at hand to look into!

jssouza, I appreciate your neat work. A listing for "pcmanfm-root" in the menu will be very useful. ctrl+alt+backbase quits from Xwindow , but no login screen appears, but brings back the desktop, immediately.

Gnome player gui too looked unstable(gets stuck).

I am not going back to XFCE in the near future. Cheers.

Thank you Raja.

I will bring an update with your inputs soon.

Regarding gnome mplayer, it was added as a gui frontend because 002-xorg has mplayer as the media player. The good news is that in the next version of porteus we will have mpv as the default player.

P7 zip not opening and build XZM module script throwing error message. LXDE probably does not have power manager for altering settings, but screen does power off after 15 min inactivity.

Please do not mind piece meal reports. I shall report as and when I come across .

@raja, this display behavior isn't related to LXDE, but probably to 002-xorg module. I know this because I've create many DEs/WMs modules and they all behave like this even when they don't have support/setting to deal with power manager.

Yes, I think so too.

@raja Could you time it the next time? I checked at my end and the screen turns off exactly after 10 mins of inactivity.

Code: Select all

xset -q
The output of this command shows:
DPMS (Energy Star):
Standby: 600 Suspend: 600 Off: 600
DPMS is Enabled

You can disable DPMS with

Code: Select all

xset -dpms
and check if the screen still turns off after 10 mins.

For configuring your own timeout:
xset dpms standby_time suspend_time off_time
Eg:
xset dpms 1200 1800 1800
Would put the system to standby after 20 mins, suspend and turns fully off after 30 mins.

If this works, I will see if I can create a small gui script to configure a screen timeout with xset.

There is also an xset comamnd to turn off the X's screensaver but I doubt that is the cause here.

Thanks jssouza. As I said, the power management is working. I roughly said 15 min, it could be 10 min, I shall time.
xset query...same as yours,

Code: Select all

Screen Saver:
prefer blanking: yes allow exposures: yes
  timeout: 600 cycle: 600
Colors:
  default colormap: 0x22 BlackPixel: 0x0 WhitePixel: 0xffffff
Font Path:
  /usr/share/fonts/TTF,built-ins
DPMS (Energy Star):
  Standby: 600 Suspend: 600 Off: 600
  DPMS is Enabled
  Monitor is On
Font cache:
Server does not have the FontCache Extension
But in Neko's Arch Budgie, the power management was not working and there was a Gnome Gui, you change settings, still Monitor keeps awake all the time.

jssouza, glad to inform you, a window message popped up when I inserted an USB disk, offering to open the file manager just like in Windows. I noticed this behaviour first time in Linux. What is your trick?

unconnected info.

Hoping a miracle, I inserted a old USB dongle, a video capture device, for any new Hardware message. Nothing.

Windows used to identify this dongle as "Polaris Video Capture device" but Linux Kernel has no information. lsusb will identify as,

Bus 001 Device 006: ID 1b80:a418

VID refers to Afatech, but there is no information on the whole Internet about PID a418. This dongle can tune analogue, digital channels from antenna, cable, play FM radios or play videos from few more inputs like Composite signals, etc, record in many video formats.

Works fine in windows. I want to try some media Kernel modules one by one ,hoping for a picture.

I believe this is a file manager setting. But it's weird that this is the first time you're seeing this working. This works out of box for me in any DE I can remember of, including Xfce and LXQt.

Regarding this Polaris video card, I guess you have no alternative besides booting on Windows. Newer Linux kernels probably won't start to provide support for such an old card. So if it hasn't provided support up to now, it won't anymore.

LXDE for Porteus 3.2.2 x86_64

jssouza, one more...

Windows 10 ,sometimes goes into hibernation, on shutdown command, which you are not aware.

Pcmanfm finds this odd, and on click the window partition, throws out authentication dialog box along with wrong password message together. You can not get rid of this by close option and this is not shown in Task Manger too for killing. frequent one job pending message!

I was wondering why this has happened till I tested fulalas LXQt. It clearly warns that windows 10 is under hibernation and remains unsafe and not mounted.

Porteus should warn this condition or should not show windows partition in the file manager as if they are mounted and safe for usage.

Please do the needful in the LXDE module.

Thanks.
