to get it work as a xfce-panel applet, i needed to rebuild with configure option: libdir=/usr/lib64
...and possibly : with-gtk=2.0
...and possibly : with-gtk=2.0

Worked ok for me. Perhaps run ldconfig after building. /usr/lib should be in the path but I will rebuild it with correct library path for the bundle package.
