We got out of Windows, but Microsoft bought QT!
What shall we do?
-Develop a new Porteus without Qt?
What are the alternatives to Qt? GTK, WxWidgets? At present they are already obsolete, still using Xlib, not yet xcb, (Qt5 started using xcb)...
-Use a toolkit based on Wayland (is there one, in production?), wait for it?
Do we need a "Qtexit"
When I read @fullmoonremix, (deprecation) and look 30 years back, I think he is mostly right 8)
What do you all think of Microsoft buying us all?
RFC....

Porteus is proud of the FASTEST KDE ever made.....(take akonadi, nepomuk and soprano out and you will have a decent OS).

@ wread... it seems the future is uncertain @ Nokia/QT.

I honestly don't think it is a problem. Windows has been gradually stepping out of the mobile market. Personally I think it's a sad thing. I own and use a windows phone for business and windows 10 mobiles are quite polished. It beats out apple and android in many areas.

@ brokenman... there may be hope still for Nokia post-Micro$oft.

The Finnish economy took a big hit on that deal so the
road back for that country will be somewhat bumpy.

Why do you think Microsoft owns Qt? What parts of Qt do you think are not opensource?

Re: We got out of Windows, but Microsoft bought QT!
I don't think it is accurate to say that Microsoft bought Qt. Nokia sold the commercial licencing part of Qt to a company called Digia about 5 years ago. That was how we got Qt5. After this, Qt moved to an 'open governance' policy which ensured no more debacles like when TrollTech was trying to close it up 15 years ago. Digia also formed 'The Qt Company' which is/was a wholly owned subsidiary. Nothing to do with Microsoft.
Now what has happened is that 'The Qt Company' has separated itself from Digia and is currently trading on NASDAQ as QTCOM.
Also Microsoft only sold the Nokia-branded featurephone division.

@ brokenman... yep I forgot about Digia. (see... The Qt Company: History )

IMO... perhaps Qtexit (or Anyexit) need not really be considered. However... it might be good
if the XCB ... Tcl (tk)... Fox toolkit and FLTK (nTK also by extension) projects are reconsidered.
These (commercially) undervalued projects are not as sexy as Gtk/Qt but have interesting/unique philosophies. Unfortunately...
(like Porteus and any other small project) the lack of robust industry support means those communities have to fill the gap.
This means the adoption curve is a steeper climb. @ least
Linux creates opportunities for smaller projects to make a case.
I'm putting the finishing touches on my secure (hardened?) derivative which favors non Gtk/Qt alternatives.
When I finally post it for the community... perhaps my derivative might further highlight the merits of these innovative projects.
Regards...
