I was lookng forward to this and was hoping to adopt it as our primary desktop. Looks like a long wait now.

Salutations... :)

Nice... :good: I recently purchased a Chromebook so my observation is... it appears the clean flat
(unbloated?) smart phone desktop metaphor (even WindozzZ has embraced this) is gaining popularity.

I must confess... I'm actually a big fan of Gtk/Qt from way back. I'm just lazy.
The truth is... below the level of GUI abstraction it's much harder to squeeze out performance.

The easy way out is to throw the desktop under the bus.

This probably explains why the ReactOS desktop looks so dated.
Perhaps their team should adopt this clean flat approach.

If you are considering this approach take close look @ the combo of PekWM... Qingy... Wbar (the Tiny Core Linux default) and Bar (by Lemonboy)
Since I see this type of desktop metaphor appeals to you... I will make a major push this week when I get my new signed firmware Coreboot gear.

They're in the USM...
http://webwarper.net/ww/~av/slakfinder. ... pkg=630474
http://webwarper.net/ww/~av/slakfinder. ... pkg=635015
http://webwarper.net/ww/~av/slakfinder. ... pkg=630559
http://webwarper.net/ww/~av/slakfinder. ... pkg=630321

This combo is also ultra lightweight (xlib/xcb) so it would give new life to antiquated 32bit 20th century hardware.

PekWM's right click floating menu doesn't hurt either because it makes the menu button moot. The design
elements can also be configured to look like anything (WindozzZ... OS/X... etc) if you don't like the default.

They look like this...

Salutations... :)

The best way to scale is to use Scalable Vector Graphics desktop elements.

@ brokenman ... could you add this link to your first post?

Wow! Now that I've seen it in action... this desktop metaphor definitely looks like a keeper. :good: Look out Gnome/Kde... there's a new kid in town.

Salutations... :good:

It seems the desktop camps both here and everywhere else...
are divided between 2 camps based on the 2 major toolkits.

They are Gtk (eg. Gnome... etc) and Qt (eg. Kde... etc) the fact is the community
would be unfairly represented if one is thrown under the bus.

I am in the Qt camp (which brought me here) and I would take exception to it's elimination
(although I would make an exception with the neutral papyrusOS shell regardless of toolkit).

Perhaps this is why brokenman has considered this unique shell.

It seems like a smart play and would silence the quarreling because it's either that
or as he originally considered... Openbox for all and every man for himself.

Anyone that would be unsatisfied could still install the desktop of their choice from the USM.

Those who protest this new strategy have to consider brokenman would be forced to support
4 light/heavy desktops based on 2 toolkits as the sole maintainer to make everybody happy.

So it appears the logical choice is to break with convention and think outside the box like he did with Nemisis.

Salutations... :good:

You are correct... those desktops (Gnome/Gtk... etc) have a large base.
However... the other guys (Kde/Qt... etc) have a large base too.

So the question is... what do you do with the other guys?

Porteus was originally based on Slax and quite a few of the "other"
guys (Kill Bill Edition) were there from the beginning (like me).

Early in the history of Porteus a design decision was made to support both large camps.

Salutations... :good:

Gnome/Gtk (...etc) and Kde/Qt (...etc) both share relative popularity throughout the Linux community.
There exists NO top dog in the Linux ecosphere in regard to the 2 primary desktop environments.

It has been this way for a VERY long time and continues. As of yet there has been
no winner take all announcement and the Porteus builder still supports the 4 desktops.

Again... the design decision to support 4 desktops took into account popularity.
However the problem is... this approach although logical is no longer practical.

Salutations... :good:

I fully agree (yep...my personal preference is xlib/xcb based). As they say... to each his own. :unknown:
