The next 'Remix' boot-time splash image/menu

Post#1 by Bicephale » 29 Dec 2010, 14:55

Hi everyone,

My suggestion for some cooperative effort over the splash screen (posted here) still stands:

"The next 'Slax-Remix' boot-time splash image/menu"

'Slax' and 'Remix' share a common past, i can post a crude capture for
practical purposes but it's not possible to edit every single link which
leads to another 'Slax' link, etc. Here's what i could cut 'n paste:

Bicephale

Hi everyone,

This post results from this other one here:

http://www.slax.org/forum.php?action=vi ... ntID=71291

A separate thread will be used to discuss cosmetic aspects related
to the next 'Slax-Remix' releases, 32 and/or 64 bits... JayFlood is
taking charge of the 32 bits build, as we may all know by now; the
64 bits one is personally managed by Fanthom who has expressed
his intention to consider a revision of 'slax.cfg' which controls how
the primary booting phase looks during 'SysLinux' execution. I've
submitted a few correctives for the present v09 release of 'slax.cfg'
in hope to start a dialog about some possible changes to come:

http://www.slax.org/forum.php?action=vi ... ntID=71288

JayFlood's preliminary reaction reads as follows:

« I would like to see a cleaner image and i believe a vector graphic
would be best as conversion to a .png format will result in sharper
image with smaller filesize. Graphic design is what i do by day, so
if anyone can provide a usable image it will save me doing more.
»

My proposal is that those who care about this feature in 'Slax-Remix'
should post here to show what they would like to see when the next
release comes out.

I'm begining to get acquainted with 'SysLinux' colour scheme setups
and it appears JayFlood can handle conversion/sizing like a pro. All we
need now is a collection of inspired snapshots to vote for i guess!

Here are my recommendations. Graphics with limited vertical content
are easier to work with when the time comes to make the menu fit
over it. The arachnoid theme of 'Slax-Remix v06' was significantly
simpler in this regard compared to that of v09, for example, but this
doesn't mean no reasonable trade-offs can be made at all even with
the more complex pictures. See for yourself:

http://www.easy-share.com/1913252654/sl ... 09-cfg.zip

Splash images with similary large uniform areas might be compatible in
the end. For the garage amateurs among us, imagine these horizontal
scenes:

1) A young lady lying flat on a long chair wearing sun-glasses
2) Dunes of sand with a coconut tree where that lady has her head

Careful selection might allow the very same menu to display nicely in
both cases provided that most areas coincide, making it possible for
the user to pick whichever splash screen he prefers.

Please feel free to use your imagination! The winner gets nothing as a
reward but his alias being honored and remembered...

;-)

All right, no need for useless talk. This one will do just fine:

jayflood

Wallah ... you win :c0

One question ... is the lady flying flat on a long chair wearing ONLY sunglasses?

-=*=-

Bicephale

JF> Wallah ... you win :c0

Right! Let them sweat... >:-D

JF> One question ... is the lady lying flat on a long chair wearing ONLY sunglasses?

Hard to tell because of the blinding light due to the sun's reflection, after she's finished applying half a bottle of UV protection oil...

-=*=-

jcsoh

If you wear sunglass and look carefully ... I think she's wearing a very tiny bikini .. at least the lower half....

-=*=-

Bicephale

Hummm...

I'm afraid those standing around who do wear sunglasses may be
facing a major issue of their own: condensation it would seem!...

-=*=-

fanthom

have no idea what you are talking about - can't see any lady there!

-=*=-

Bicephale

Oh but wait, i think we're all victims of the most grotesque
level of confusion! It seems there's been a typo doubled by
some incorrect phrasing (words have switched positions!):

JF> One question ... is the lady flying flat on a long chair wearing ONLY sunglasses?

I believe this quote should read as shown below:

JF> One question ... is the fat flying lady on a long chair wearing ONLY sunglasses?

It's a fat flying lady, which explains why she had to use half
a bottle of suntan oil - that in turn causing all the witnesses
to see only a blurred spotlight (since she's also flying)!...

My goodness, it could as well have been a comet!!!

forum

remind me of one flew over the cuckoo nest actually or was it fat bottom Girl???

subkid

What resolution do you need?

I tried to do one that matches the original Slax 6 style:

Image

I have an XCF and everything is easily scalable.

I don't know if this works for Remix, but I tried.

clover stay, add tinker bell with her magic wand, background space the final frontier :)

That was a joke, right?

Bicephale

JayFlood is the one to ask about resolution and file format,
if a picture is chosen that's the one i'll attempt to fit a menu
on. In the present case i'd recommend that the thinker bell
creature be located on the right side, the giant clover leaf
would be a lesser problem either if it were smaller or made
less obvious through fading as in paper watermarks...

-=*=-

subkid

Just use this with gimp.

If, of course, you are really being serious (??!) about using "thinker bell creature".

Bicephale

This is my selection criteria:

Image

("Easy-to-Fit" vs "Hard-to-Fit")

The animation link from above is for explanation purposes only.

I've offered to handle "Easy-to-Fit", i'll pass on "Hard-to-Fit"...

The others will pick whichever picture they like, i think it's only
fair that JayFlood has the final word. The rest is all yours to
decide! If you prefer a flying cow i have no problem with that
as long as it's possible to get an easy-to-read menu from it.

Moved from "International Users" to "General Chat" as International is for non-english speaking users only.
Please add [Solved] to your thread title if the solution was found.

Still looking for more suggestions on splash. If you have something you think would suit (leaving space on left for menu) feel free to post.

The red flare (???) with no 2 (phantom logo) in the middle
The deep space with no 1 ( phanthom logo) in the middle
The font type in unkownX.doc ( word 2007 format )
might be good

Is it time to start looking at a revised menu?
