What media player do you use?

Post#1 by brokenman » 11 Dec 2015, 22:23

What media player do you prefer, and do you stream media over a network often?

Answers can include video and audio applications. Thanks.

audio and video
vlc

network streaming
firefox mainly for youtube....but not very often

I then grab it with youtube-dl
and playback with vlc

PS I have just created a mini tutorial in Nemesis on how to use vlc and youtube streaming, it should also work for other network streams as long as your firewall does not block certain ports.

For me it's Mozilla FireFox for both. I prefer online video and radio.

Browser for almost everything!!
But also use : Vlc in arch (or smplayer in porteus);
Clementine, because the plugins:spotify and souncloud. (heavy: + 15 mb...)
And deadbeef very light but you need to do some stuff.

Video: VLC & GNOME MPlayer (recognises bookmarks 8) )

Frequent Streaming (Greasemonkey ViewTube): VLC & Gecko Media Player(plays YT, there where VLC fails)

Another gmplayer advantage is that cache %age shown, and file can be found and hardlinked. So if a big file and something worth watching, save on bandwidth.

The one bugbear is that all these players start with 100% volume, and if it's late night and relaxing with playing a video, if not careful can suddenly start off with an ad at earsplitting crescendo. :O:

@Bogomips

offtopic but semi-related

If you are using Nemesis add volume control to the panel will prevent your eariness, can't remember if Porteus has feature.

2) in Nemesis I have posted how to get vlc YT working, it might work for Porteus but I have removed that from my hard drive

Audio = Deadbeef and / or Gnome-MPlayer because Audacious lacks some Plugins in 3.1
Neon HTTP/HTTPS Plugin...(usr/lib/audacious/Transport/neon.so)
and
E/A Plugin...(usr/lib/audacious/Transport/unix-io.so)

Video = MPlayer + some GUI
VLC..hmmm...I never installed it..oversized..too much bloat..(imho)

mplayer all the way. vlc is good but requires too much to build :( xine is also good, but mplayer is and has been included in slax and also in porteus. Why change to something else?

I am guilty of drifting offtopic.....What media player do you use? But at least I have a decency to say so in my post.
Commenting on the size of a player, or how hard it is to configure etc are all off topics IMHO.

myself, donald and Tonio are now guilty of drifting off topic.
I shall of course have no beer for one week as punishment but not sure what is a good punishment for those two other gentlemen

Currently none because I don't use media in Porteus. But once I switch my current Windows install more fully to Porteus (earliest some time next year) I will use wine+foobar2000 for audio and mplayer for the rare occasions when I need video.

I've tried a few Linux audio players (I'm really into audio) but so far none approaches what I can do with foorbar2000. As this runs quite well with wine, there's no immediate reason to look for something different though any input would be welcome.

I was not referring to you. Also I hope you see I was showing a smilie and half joking by chatting about beer and punishment. You are welcome to make whatever decisions you make, but I was trying to prevent members from making remarks that might start a flame war on the benefits of otherwise of one player over another.

I think brokenman is trying to find out what people use as media players. But if I have offended you in my comments to others....I hope you will forgive me or Porteus members.
I am an Australian so we aussies tend to speak our mind more freely than say the British.

Good luck Sir
