Wine or VirtualBox

(This is a serious question, not at all an attempt to troll.)

Technically speaking, what are the merits/demerits of running a set of apps under Wine/Linux vs in a Windows guest in VirtualBox/Linux?

I can see one obvious difficulty for the Wine way... some Windows programs just won't run. I can see an obvious difficulty for the VirtualBox way: you do need a valid Windows license.

But other than that... VirtualBox seems to be a smaller package than Wine and gives one a full Windows environment (plus the ability to run other stuff in VMs). I've no idea about memory footprints, virtualisation overhead etc.

So what do others think?

Best thing is for you to install windows vbox guest on linux host and report. You should not have rights problems if you run windows guest on the same box where is your original windows installation.

We would appreciate your report. Maybe wread and Ed_P will comment on your findings.

I did. I have P64+VB64+a cloned 32--bit Win7 guest on a stick. This setup is working very well... so well in fact, that it got me started thinking about why an apparently sizeable number of people use Wine instead of VBox. I have some experience with VBox but none whatsoever with Wine, so I can't really say anything meaningful about that.
