[How to] an host file to fight again advertisement

Post#1 by blablotin » 23 Mar 2011, 17:38

Hi all,
I have discover a tip to fight again advertisement by host file, thanks to Hajdar we will see how to modify this file to block advertisement and then the way to update automatically.

why to do this since we can use AdBlock or others softwares to block advertisement?
Because it is not enough sufficiency for safe level or download speed; In fact although adblock prevent displaying of advertisement content, it is downloaded and is present in the browser's cash, and it would be the same for trojans and malwares, so Hajdar give an updated host file to block unwanted files 's download before the begin of the connection. since it will look up blacklist content in the localhost: 127.0.0.1 instead of the internet.
For example: if we put a line: 127.0.0.1 http://www.google.com, then any program who try to connect to http://www.google.com will be redirected to the server address with ip 127.0.0.1
The hosts is available in his website: http://www.adzhosts.fr/?cat=4

Before the install, remember to back up the hosts file:

Code: Select all

cd /etc/
cp hosts hosts.backup
installation:
first way:
go to http://www.adzhosts.fr/ and download the last built of AdZHosts. Then unzip the file un your home folder. And finally move the hosts file into /etc/ folder as root.

Second way
With the script available here:
http://kosvocore.free.fr/AdZHosts/adzhosts.sh. it need to be root to be launched.

If you have a problem to connect to a website, you can delete its address from hosts

uninstall:
you can delete the replaced hosts file, and restore the back up of the original.

I currently use host file to block in this way. I have no time for collecting up to date info every week so a list like this is excellent! Thanks.

Links broken -- updates?

Used to do this in WinXP, (so very) many moons ago, using info from [ http://winhelp2002.mvps.org/hosts2.htm ].

Q1. Would I need to do anything special for use in Porteus 3.0 x64 (beyond clean formatting CR/LF)?

Q2. I remember that by the time I had effective ad & malware control, this process -really- slowed XP web browsing. Web research indicated time lag due to reading huge hosts file prior to each outbound request. Should I expect same slow-down under Porteus?

Thanks in advance!

I use Privoxy as posted in this forum last year. Put "privoxy" in the search box to see the details...

Porteus is proud of the FASTEST KDE ever made.....(take akonadi, nepomuk and soprano out and you will have a decent OS).

Thanks for your response. I'm sure you meant well, but I get a '404' error page, not a search box & not in English. Further, I don't know what 'privoxy' might entail (guessing 'privacy-proxy'?). What I -really- need is answers to Q1 & Q2 from my post above. Might anyone here have that info?

Using info from [ http://winhelp2002.mvps.org/hosts2.htm ]:

Q1. Would I need more than line-ending format cleanup?

Q2. Should I expect hosts-file blocking to slow browsing under Porteus 3.0 x32/x64?

Thanks in advance!

You appear to have a trouble understanding English tb01. So let me try to interrupt what wread posted to you.

At the top of these webpages in the upper right corner is a white box with the word Search in it. In the box enter the letters "privoxy" then click on the button next to it labeled Search. This will result in a new webpage of all the postings here with the word "privoxy" in them. Scroll down until you get to this one: http://forum.porteus.org/viewtopic.php? ... oxy#p17882

A1. No this is not the same as the old Windows hosts file method to reduce webpage ads. Windows XP has expired and so has this method.

A2. Don't know. Try it and find out.
