Porteus v1.2rc1 is ready for testing!

Post#1 by brokenman » 20 Feb 2012, 19:13

The Porteus Community is pleased to announce the first Release Candidate of Porteus Version 1.2 This release features the addition of the XFCE desktop environment, which can be downloaded as a standalone ISO for both 32 and 64 bit editions. Other major upgrades and features include:

- kernel bumped to version 3.2.6 in the 64bit editions
- kernel remains at version 3.1.8 in the 32bit editions (3.2.6 is available in extras folder)
- KDE upgraded to 4.8.0 (64-bit KDE/LXDE edition)
- Trinity upgraded to 3.5.13rc14 (32-bit KDE/LXDE edition)
- XFCE desktop in version 4.8.3 (XFCE edition for both archs)
- Firefox upgraded to version 10.0
- dropped /boot/syslinux/syslinux as extlinux supports FAT filesystems as well.
- busybox is recompiled against new uClibc library patched for support for more than 256 loop devices (thanks to uClibc dev team for the patch). no need for carrying glibc based initrd for that purpose
- added support for encrypted .dat containers
- added new cheatcode: 'volume=' for adjusting volume level after login into GUI
- added avahi daemon and recompiled all desktops with zeroconf support
- added 'proprietary-watcher' process to rc.4 which sniffs /var/log/Xorg.0.log for errors and unload nVidia/ati-fglrx drivers when Xorg fails at startup. Opensource direvers are used on second try.
- devided '/opt/porteus-scripts/paths' into separate scripts and moved to /opt/porteus-scripts/xorg folder. these scripts (browser, terminal, fmanager) should be used instead of /tmp/.terminal, /tmp/.browser and /tmp/wmanager. scripts does the same job but covers all scenarios unlike /tmp symlinks.
