Solved: Google chrome will stay to an older version

Post#1 by francois » 26 Sep 2023, 13:56

Google chrome will stay to an older version, google-chrome-101.0.4951.54-x86_64-en-US, though I have inserted the most recent vesion.

The module is not in my module folder. However the most recent version is there.

There is only one occurence found by mlocate:

Code: Select all

root@porteus:updatedb
root@porteus:/home/guest# locate google-chrome/var/lib/pkgtools/packages/google-chrome-101.0.4951.54-x86_64-en-US
/var/lib/pkgtools/packages/google-chrome-117.0.5938.92-x86_64-en-US
root@porteus:/home/guest#
With gslapt, google-chrome-101.0.4951.54-x86_64-en-US appears installed. Uninstalling it thru gslapt will not solve the problem.

Any suggestion will be appreciated to remove google-chrome-101.0.4951.54-x86_64-en-US.

Thanks.

did you successful deactivate the older version of google-chrome prior activating the newer version of google-chrome?

If you could successfully deactivated the older version then the whole thing is very weird. Worst scenario I can currently think of: an exploit is actively using the older google-chrome code - Vulnerability CVE-2023-4863 of Google's Libwebp - CAVE! - affecting main browsers and known programs - and preventing you from running the updated version (maybe because the updated version fixed the Vulnerability CVE-2023-4863) .

And of course if that was truly the case, capturing the rogue code in your system and giving it to security researchers would help.
You can use virusscan.jotti.org to upload suspected malware code; I use it rarely but still use it over the years again and again. Best online scanner with the most supported scan engines out here. :)

Google chrome will stay to an older version

Post#3 by francois » 28 Sep 2023, 09:38

The older version is no more in use in my module folder.

As I have mention, a search with mlocate could not find older version of google-chrome than /var/lib/pkgtools/packages/google-chrome-117.0.5938.92-x86_64-en-US, idem with a search with mc (midnight commander).

Is there other ways to search for google-chrome-101.0.4951.54-x86_64-en-US?

I have a save changes folder and I am working with porteus 5.x version

Just found it. When we were in v 5.rc2, I was using old modules for v.4.0 this old google-chrome version was one of them, same for okular.

Thanks.
