Nemesis update- v23.09 (2023-09-14)

Post#1 by ncmprhnsbl » 16 Sep 2023, 11:09

Time for a new update:

ISOs available here: ISO Downloads :dl-green:
Modules here: Module Downloads :dl-green:
05-devel here: 05-devel Download :dl-green:
Kernel and crippled sources: Kernel Downloads :dl-green:

Changelog:
  • Packages updated to 2023-09-14 (and mirrorlists set to corresponding package archive by default)
  • Kernel updated to 6.5.3 (Reminder: neko's kernel builder app works with nemesis if you want a newer or different or tuned to your hardware kernel)
  • Added /usr/share/doc/nemesis/* html help/faq doc (accessed via menu>system>Nemesis FAQ) providing some basic info ..work in progress(eg. i noticed the swapfile info was incorrect) since i just adapted the porteus version. Could do with info on openrc and upnemesis among other things.
  • Fixed a bug with syslog-ng failing to start > disable hypr
  • Added an option in <install_media>/config/modules to set compression mode (xz or zstd) for module creation that's referenced by dir2xzm which in turn is used by pman, arc2xzm, upnemesis. Default is xz.
if updating manually, add this to /config/modules:

    Code: Select all

    ### When compressing modules during module creation, use either xz
    ### or zstd. Xz makes a smaller module, zstd larger but has faster decompression.
    ### Xz is the default, uncomment and change to zstd if that's what you want.
    #Compression=xz
  • Added a simple script: convertz that will detect xz compressed modules in a target folder and convert them to zstd compressed modules placing them in a designated folder.

    Code: Select all

    # convertz
Script to convert a folder of xz compressed modules to zstd.
     Usage: ./convertz path/to/folder/of <(xz)modules.xzm> /path/to/folder/of/converted <(zstd)modules.xzm>
  • Changed startup of pipewire to use artix-pipewire-launcher via it's .desktop file in /etc/xdg/autostart
  • Likely something i've forgotten

All appreciations for the team work !
Maybe it would be better for beginners in iso by default autologin to be disabled
And screensaver to be set by default with pasword
Thanks for this nice porteus derivative !

I don't agree.

A good OS In my opinion must have by default :
- a firewall with possibility to give or not give acces to the internet for every app started like
simplewall firewall or no root firewall
- a TCP/IP monitoring app like currports app
- after first OS installation and restart autologin disabled for others users access protection
- a screensaver with password with possibility to be or not to be enabled
- antivirus for linux & windows like dr web appimage to protect wine apps & appimages
So , Porteus will be a very good OS

Nemesis update- v23.09 (2023-09-14)

I just install Cinnamon v23.09 and here is what I found out. After a New Year I wanted to upgrade.

1. When I install Libreoffice but it didn't create a module so I couldn't put in the modules directory. How can I save it on a reboot?

2. I went to run it and it work OK but the icons were in black and white. Is there away to get them in color?
I just like Slackware because I think it teach you about Linux to build packages where Ubuntu is like Windows you just install programs you want.

Happy New Year Jack.

What error did it show it encountered to not create a module?

The easiest way to get LibreOffice today is through an AppImage that is regularly updated. You can download it from the pagehttps://www.libreoffice.org/download/appimage/

Judging by the screenshots you send, it looks like you have started Nemesis with some option that prevents you from saving changes to your system. You probably need to review your saved settings and start in normal mode.

Here is some screen shots.

This shot is when I ran setup-pman
(both those screenshots are the same one)

Code: Select all

/usr/local/bin/dir2xzm: line 18: fatal: command not found
looks like partly a bug to do with calling a function (fatal) that doesn't seem to exist,
but more importantly the message it's trying to convey:
/usr/local/bin/dir2xzm: line 18:

Code: Select all

{ fatal "$LINENO" "`gettext "No modules config file found."`"; exit; }
which leads to the question: does your installation include the config folder?
that is, the USB must contain these folders: boot, porteus, EFI, config. (and the config folder must contain all it's subfolders/files)

a headsup:
updated nemesis on the way.. ETA : soonish
