Hi !
A GNU/Linux user and even trainer for years, I've been testing various OSes and distros, especialy for small and old boxes [0]. 24 hours ago I've never heard of Porteus.
Now I'm looking for a distro that: On the performance side, could compare to the Arch Linux efficiency on my old Atom netbooks. And on the practical size, for a modular customizable (frugal-)installable distro with copy2ram option for proper use on flash-memory devices.
Heard a guy talking of "Porteus, modulart as Slax, only actively maintained" and went to Distrowatch to check, then to porteus web site. Had a first glimpse at the docs (which, worth to notice, are a pleasure to search and find what I was looking for), then here on a few boards.
Porteus seems more appealing and special than what Distrowatch's Jessie Smith somehow superficial review let imagine [1]. Reviewing a construction tractor with a SUV perspective gives poor result, and so does it for a Formula 1.
Quality and quantity good looking documentation, easy to browse: Whoever is behind it, they're good at the job! As for DW's Jessie, at the very least he could have given the doc [2] a chance (then he could have said there's some broken link [3] )
Will test the XFCE edition customized through the super handy builder at handy build.porteus.org
Pardon the brievety, have to sleep to further automatize a set of real-world tests for daily uses amongst various distros, and get critics/help from others.
Also have got that little feeling from a tooth that decided to break yesterday --week end time.
Yo :]

Welcome to porteus forum. Do not hesitate to ask questions.
As for Jessie Smith review, lets say that it was not a gift. But it could be took on the constructive side.
Provide us with the pleasure of additional commentaries, once you are more accustomed to porteus. It is good to have a new eye on the work.
The last link that you provided does not work and it relates to ppm the older package manager:

The new package manager is called usm. Faq are a little outdated. The reason being that most people ask questions on the forum and do not read the faq.

Yes I will, most probably. My first move is to test Porteus as it comes on a USB stick. Then to install it on the stick side by side with other distros (Multiboot).francois wrote:Provide us with the pleasure of additional commentaries, once you are more accustomed to porteus.
OK. the link for « How can I install new programs that are not included in the default Porteus ISO? » under this point in the FAQ is broken as I said. The last link that you provided does not work and it relates to ppm the older package manager:
